With his gregarious personality, infectious laugh, and never-ending willingness to connect with and assist others, Jonathan Larbi’s presence can be found in any gathering space, classroom, or event at Arrupe College. Whether embracing social interaction, volunteering as an orientation and a retreat leader, serving as the co-president of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Arrupe, or working for Arrupe’s Office of Admission, Jonathan seems to be ever-present in the Arrupe community.

“Loyola's diverse array of student clubs and organizations has been instrumental in nurturing my leadership skills and boosting my self-confidence,“ Jonathan said. “Initially, I had intended to prioritize my education with a more solitary focus. However, as time progressed, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the warm and empathetic community that surrounds me. This choice to engage socially has enriched my experience at Arrupe in immeasurable ways,“ he continued.

Having begun his academic journey at Arrupe College, Jonathan will continue his studies in the field of biology at Loyola, followed by the pursuit of admission to medical school, where he will strive to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a pediatrician. Coming from a wonderfully large family with five children–three of whom are currently pursuing degrees in higher education–Jonathan believes the scholarship support provided by Loyola has been instrumental in enabling him to strive for success and contribute to his family's aspirations for a brighter future.

Here, Johnathan reflects on his future goals and how Arrupe has prepared him for what’s next:

What do you hope to achieve after college, and how has Loyola prepared you?

”I intend to use my Biology degree and the knowledge I gain from it to pursue admission to medical school, where I will strive to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a pediatrician. Loyola has prepared me for the world that lies ahead. Through Loyola's extensive network of internships and mentorships, I have had the privilege of gaining invaluable exposure to careers that align with my passions and interests. Moreover, Loyola's diverse array of student clubs and organizations has been instrumental in nurturing my leadership skills and boosting my self-confidence.”

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned from your Loyola education?

”Loyola has taught me to be open-minded. Through its diverse and inclusive community, Loyola has encouraged me to embrace different viewpoints and cultures.”

How have you been influenced by Loyola’s Jesuit mission?

”Loyola's Jesuit mission to expand a diverse community in seeing God in all things is powerful. I was blessed to spend some time at Loyola's Rome facility, where I was greeted with unwavering love and history surrounding the Jesuit teachings. As I immersed myself in the traditions and values of the Jesuit institution in the heart of Rome, I couldn't help but be struck by life's journey and the boundless love that flows from a spiritual connection with God.”
