The Spirit of Arrupe

Orientation is composed of two parts: An overnight stay at Loyola's Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC) in Woodstock, IL and a 3-day on-campus orientation. Please note that attendance to the entire orientation is required, there are no exceptions for family vacations, athletic tournaments, or other summer programming.

LUREC OVERNIGHT STAY

An overnight community building experience will be hosted at Loyola's Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC). You will meet at Maguire Hall where we will board busses to LUREC. The experience will involve community building, learning about the Arrupe mission and Student Promise, and become more connected with your fellow students.   Students will attend be assigned a group and attend this retreat on the following dates:

• Group 1: August 3-4
• Group 2: August 5-6

ON-CAMPUS ORIENTATION

You will experience two days at Loyola's Water Tower Campus (home to Arrupe College) to meet you academic advisor, learn about campus resources, and get your campus essentials for the start of the new academic year, including your free laptop. The third day will take place at Loyola's Lake Shore campus to learn about resources such as the Damen Student Center and Information Commons.

The dates for on-campus orientation are:

• August 12 at Water Tower Campus
• August 13 at Water Tower Campus
• August 21 at Lake Shore Campus

Orientation is a four-day experience that gets you ready to be a successful college student. At the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Center (LUREC), you'll take part in activities designed to help you get to know other new students, faculty, and staff, and to learn what you need to start strong at Arrupe College. On campus, you'll meet your faculty advisor, connect with campus resources, tour campus, and get ready for your classes and degree program. You'll also pick up your laptop and U-Pass during on-campus orientation.

Orientation happens in two required parts, plus one optional event:

• LUREC (overnight, required): You're assigned to either August 3–4 or August 5–6. LUREC is the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Center in Woodstock, Illinois.
• On campus (required): August 12–13.
• New Student Convocation (optional): Friday, August 21.

Check your email for your assigned LUREC dates and mark all three on your calendar.

No. Orientation is required, and you may not change your assigned dates. You must attend both days of both required parts of Orientation.

For LUREC, meet your classmates at the Water Tower Campus. You'll travel together by private bus. You can get to Water Tower Campus any way you like, whether it's to meet to go to LUREC, or either day of on-campus orientation.

No. Orientation is free, and meals and snacks will be provided.

For the first half of orientation at LUREC, bring an overnight bag and anything you need on a daily basis other than food (clothes, medicine, toiletries, chargers, etc.). Lodging, including sheets and towels, will be provided. 

• Review and follow instructions from any emails Arrupe has already sent you.
• Know how to get to the Water Tower Campus by the designated time.
• Come ready to meet the people you'll be on this journey with!

You can get a Rambler Card at the Campus Card Office. On the Water Tower Campus, it's in the Corboy Law Center, on the same side of the street as Arrupe, at the end of the block. Go in, turn right immediately, and look for the people behind the glass windows.

New student surveys go out to each incoming student through both your LUC and personal email accounts. You'll also get a personalized QR code for your survey when you check in for LUREC Orientation. Don't forward your survey link to a friend as each link is assigned to one student.

• First, try sending an email from your phone or a public computer at Arrupe to helpdesk@luc.edu or call 773-508-4487 to explain the issue. Information Technology Services will open a work order ticket for you.
• Then visit the front desk at the Office of Student Services for help. You may need to check out a loaner laptop while yours is being repaired.

Make sure you are logged in with your Loyola email and password! In any Office application, click File -> Account and check to make sure. Still stuck? Contact the Office of Academic Affairs or the Office of Student Success.

Log in to LOCUS and click on the “Academic Progress” tab. Click on the “Advisors” tab on the left sidebar. You'll find your advisor's name, photo, and email there. Not listed? Check with the Office of Academic Affairs.  

Log in to LOCUS and click on the “Manage Classes” tile. You should see your class schedule there. If it isn't, check with the Office of Academic Affairs or your faculty advisor. Check back before classes start, as rooms sometimes change.

Probably not for your first term. If you’re enrolled in a class that you have AP, IB, or dual credit for or a class that applies to a different major, or you have an extenuating circumstance, you can email oaa@luc.edu to explain and request a change, and CC your faculty advisor to keep them in the loop.

Don't close it without reading it! It's usually asking you to update your local address or confirm an emergency contact, even if you've already provided one.

• To update your address: click “Profile,” then the “Addresses” tab on the left sidebar. Make sure both your Permanent Address and your Local Off-Campus Address are filled in (unless you live in Baumhart).
• To confirm your emergency contact: click “Emergency Contact,” then “Confirm Info with No Changes.”

If the banner says something else and you can't figure out how to address it, check with the Office of Academic Affairs or the Office of Student Success.

Email oaa@luc.edu and CC your faculty advisor to keep them in the loop.

You have two options:

• Bring your paper records to the Wellness Center in the Terry Student Center, across the street from Arrupe, at the end of the block.
• Download the Loyola app, select “Health,” and log in with your UVID (the part of your email address before “@luc.edu”) and password. Select “Update Health Records,” then upload a screenshot of your paper copy or a PDF of your digital records.

Visit the Office of Academic Affairs on the 3rd floor and ask to speak with Joe Drake or Angie Azouri.

This fall, you likely have five or six courses, so you will probably eventually have five or six course sites in Sakai. Each professor has to build and publish their course’s Sakai site, and professors have only a few weeks between the end of their summer course and the start of fall semester. That can delay publishing, so Sakai may look empty for a couple more weeks.

Yes. If you don't maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (a GPA of at least 2.0, and credit earned for at least 67% of the credits you attempt), you'll get an email about being on Academic Probation. While you're on probation, your advisor and the Retention and Learning Coordinator will work with you to build a plan to get back on track academically. If your GPA doesn't improve, you could be dismissed.

You have several options:

• LUC Bookstore (Terry Student Center, across the street from Arrupe, at the other end of the block): rent or buy many of your textbooks here. You don't have to wait for your professor to publish their course site. Professors often tell the bookstore what books you'll need months in advance.
• Order online: if a book isn't listed at the bookstore and your professor hasn't published their course site yet, email them right away and ask if there is a book you should buy for their course. That way you can order ahead and be ready on day one.
• Lewis Library Course Reserves: check this link to see if your course has a book on reserve. You can check these books out for a few hours at a time while you use them in the library, or for a few days at home, depending on the book. This is a great way to save money if you don't need to turn anything in from the book.
• Resource Tables during Welcome Week at Arrupe College: stop by for information on discounted textbooks and financial assistance programs.

U-Pass distribution happens on Day Two of on-campus orientation (Thursday, August 13). Bring your LUC Student ID or a government-issued ID. Follow the directions printed on the U-Pass sleeve to activate it. It will not work unless you activate it.

The U-Pass is for your commute, and yours only. If you double-tap or try to swipe someone else through, you'll be charged the Ventra fee and see “Insufficient funds” on your next attempt to board a CTA bus or train. You can pay off the balance, and your U-Pass will go back to normal.

A replacement costs $50. Complete the Lost/Stolen Card form to request one. If you need financial assistance, contact Dean Keys (dkeys2@luc.edu). Arrupe College can help cover the cost of your first U-Pass replacement.

Both LUREC and On-Campus Orientation surveys will be given to students in paper form. Please complete both surveys so we have an idea of the incoming student experience. Surveys are anonymous. Your voice matters, and it will inform future iterations of the Spirit of Arrupe Orientation.  

Hopefully during orientation you have started getting used to your new commute! 

Here are a few tips:

• Use your U-Pass for free CTA rides.
• Download the Ventra app to check for delays on your bus or train.
• Leave earlier than you think you need to. When you get to school early you can check in with a professor, say hi to a friend, take a moment for yourself, or grab a cup of coffee or a bite at Wintrust Student Commons, and be relaxed when class starts. Then, if you do hit a delay, you'll still have a shot at making it on time.
