What does it mean to go to a Jesuit Institution?
I think about the values that a Jesuit Institution like Arrupe College carries and uses to support the students, faculty, and other employees. Values such as Cura Personalis where we recognize individuals are unique and care for them in every aspect. At Arrupe, I really felt these Jesuit values within the community everyday.
What professor should a new student absolutely take a class with and why?
A new student should absolutely take a class with Dr. Sirman because she pushes students to try their best and learn the course material. If you are going into some sort of science field or you just want to take a science class, take at least one course with Dr. Sirman. Her class encouraged me to learn about myself and how to change my bad learning habits. There is a great mix of lecture and hands-on learning methods in each one of her courses.
What's the best thing you've done since coming to Arrupe?
The best thing that I have done since coming to Arrupe is genuinely grow as a person. I dreaded waking up early to commute over 90 minutes to school to have class until 5:00 pm, however it built discipline within me. Since attending Arrupe, I notice myself being more productive and having a certain pride in doing things to the best of my ability.
What is some advice you would give an incoming freshman?
I encourage you ask questions when you need help or have confusion! Maintaining good relationships with professors and peers leads to a clear understanding of your responsibilities for each course you take. The community at Arrupe is nothing short of amazing because of our willingness to support and provide for each other. Lastly, just have fun and try your best to adjust to being a college student. Meet cool people, study together, and make the most of your Arrupe experience.
