Hello! My name is Jessica Flores Perez. I'm here to tell you about my Arrupe College experience.
How I chose my degree:
The reason for selecting my degree consists of my drive and passion for the connection of sociology in all things. The study of how we view the world and how that could dictate our policy making interest me greatly. I believe that sociology will allow me to be invested in what we as youth and young adults can do to better our mental and physical, without having societal determinates that stunt our ability to grow. This, however, begins with policy changing, searching for statistics and social sciences.
My plans after graduation:
I will be enrolled into Loyola University, college of Art and Sciences and will be acquiring bachelors in sociology and master's in public health.
Professor a new student should absolutely take a class with:
A class that I think is really important for a person to take is Ethics with . I love the way in which Ethics dives into deep thinking and the final essay for this class, in my opinion helps students learn more about not only themselves but learn how to express their beliefs in a respectful while remaining with an open mind but still standing their ground.
Class I never expected to love:
A class I never expected to love was math and Statistics, I've always told myself I was bad at math. However, during these courses Arrupe’s math professors know how to communicate and motivate student to not give up when it comes to math, this allowed me and reassured me that even in the most difficult coursers, as student we must learn to adapt. Math now to me is something that, teaches me to go with the flow, meaning allow myself to practice if I need to and that mistakes constantly happen. For example, I liked how our students (especially math fellows) help other student not feel "dumb" or like they are "not a math person." Thanks to this class I now do not narrow myself but instead challenge myself with confidence. Environmental Science Lab, this class changed me to be able to adapt and taught me how to practice better for next time. With this class it changed me to be able to manage my time and how to become better at studying.
Favorite spot on campus:
My favorite place on campus is the Corboy Law Center because of the wonderful and beautiful library. I love how you can see the city lights as you study for finals, or how you can get a study room with a group of friends and work together to become better students.
Best thing I've done since coming to Arrupe:
The best thing I’ve done since coming to Arrupe is becoming a student ambassador. I full heartedly believe that this school was destined to fall into my path, and I was grateful that I was able to be assigned this role to speak highly about a school that deserves so much recognition. I am now able to speak to students who were once me, and teach them what they will gain from attending a Jesuit institution, which is a better awareness of who they are and their potential.
Some surprisingly cool things about Arrupe:
I think Arrupe’s location is super cool and convenient! I love that it’s in the center of Chicago (one of the best cities in the world) because you learn more about the community and there are endless opportunities to do and go anywhere. I love how many people walk around and the freedom that comes to hop on a train and go anywhere.
