“Towards Just Relationships”:
From Service to Community Engaged Learning in Social Justice Pedagogy
Thursday, February 22
10:00-11:30 am
IES  123/24

In the wake of 30 years of national attention to “service” and “service-learning” in higher education, this keynote shares research on the impacts of such experiences on  students and alumni, along with the challenges faculty and community partners face in traditional service learning models. We will build upon the experiences of participants with an eye toward developing courses and curricular models rooted in principles of social justice and social transformation that are appropriate for our students, our departments, local communities, and ourselves as faculty and staff at Loyola University Chicago. Following the framework of a critical service learning pedagogy, we will consider the barriers and opportunities to developing authentic relationships, redistributing power, and bringing attention to social change in our work as educators.  Register at: https://2018mitchell.eventbrite.com
