Tara Gray Workshop | TAA Membership Information
This program is offered to provide scholar-practitioners currently doing academic research and writing an opportunity to work together to explore the resources and opportunities available to Loyola University Chicago faculty and staff. Participants will be expected to have a current research project or proposed project to work on during the course of the semester. Focus will be on research and writing related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy as aspects of Jesuit teaching principles.
During the initial sessions, we will strive to identify threads of research areas that may be of interest to groups of scholars. These threads might include:
- (SOTL) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
- Community engagement
- Application of the Ignatian paradigm
- Other topics as suggested by participants
The program will include a presentation by Dr. Tara Gray, associate professor of criminal justice at New Mexico State University. Dr. Gray is also the first director of the Teaching Academy at NMSU and the author of Publish & Flourish: Become a Prolific Scholar.
Subsequent workshop sessions will include short presentations from campus resource people followed by dedicated writing time.
Program Goals:
1. Encourage research and scholarship related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.
2. Identify research and scholarship opportunities related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.
3. Provide space to foster and increase research and scholarship related to our Jesuit tradition.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the program, participates will:
1. Actively participate in a community of practice dedicated to sharing research-based writing related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.
2. List campus resources available to support research and scholarship related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.
3. Demonstrate growth in practice of good writing habits that create space for research and scholarship related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.
4. Identify potential outlets for scholarship related to community engagement and Ignatian Pedagogy.

Friday, March 16, 9:00-12:00. Information Commons, 4th Floor. Publish and Flourish workshop with Tara Gray. - Friday, February 23, 1:30-3:30. Piper Hall first floor. Library resources presentation followed by writing time.
- Friday March 23, 2:00-4:00. Piper Hall first floor. Finding research grants presentation followed by writing time.
- Friday, April 13, 9:30-12:00.Piper Hall first floor. IRB research guidelines presentation followed by writing time and lunch.
Campus Resources Presentations:
- University Libraries: assistance in finding appropriate journals for research and publication
- Office of Research Services: research grants available
- Institutional Review Board (IRB): identifying when approval to use data must be sought
Information on Tara Gray:
On Friday, March 16, 2018, Dr. Tara Gray will be presenting her workshop Publish and Flourish: Becoming a Prolific Scholar. Dr. Gray serves as associate professor of criminal justice and as founding director of the Teaching Academy at New Mexico State University (NMSU). The Teaching Academy provides NMSU educators with training, mentoring and networking. She has presented faculty development workshops to 10,000 participants in thirty-five states, as well as Thailand, Guatemala, Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Workshop participants report that Dr. Gray is "spirited, entertaining, and informative--she's anything but gray!"
Participants of the workshop will learn to:
- triple their productivity by writing daily,
- create effective outlines after you write,
- write research that is clearer, better organized and more compelling,
- solicit meaningful feedback before formal peer review.
TAA Membership Information:
