Dean's Message
Dean's Welcome
A Message from interim Dean Fr. Michael Rozier, SJ, PhD:
Welcome to the Graduate School at Loyola University Chicago. The Graduate School provides many opportunities to find where your gifts and interests intersect with the needs of today’s complex world. Located in a world-class global city, students will find opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and many professional fields including communication, nursing, social work, and education.
The Graduate School recently celebrated 100 years of expanding knowledge in the service of humanity. In the Jesuit tradition, graduate education can be described as what we call a “learned ministry”. Both the adjective and the noun are essential for understanding why Loyola University Chicago and many other Jesuit universities place so many resources into graduate education.
First, our work is learned. Our expert faculty create a rigorous environment, but it is a rigor that is always paired with support. In classrooms, labs, and community settings, we draw upon knowledge that has been built up over centuries. The beauty of graduate education is that you become part of that tradition of knowledge creation, asking new questions and discovering novel answers, all for the sake of revealing what is true about our world.
Second, our work is a ministry. We have failed if the education a student gains at LUC is only used to benefit that student. We want our students to be successful, but a Jesuit education is different in that its true value is assessed in the degree to which it benefits others, especially those who are in greatest need. This idea of self-gift is modeled by our faculty, who generously place their talents at the service of forming you - the next generation of practitioners and scholars.
I hope you find what you are looking for as you explore the Graduate School here at Loyola University Chicago. And I hope you will join our community and help reveal what is good and true about each other and the world around us.
- Father Michael Rozier, SJ, PhD
