Director Widen's Welcome

Director Jeanne Widen

We are Loyola Rome

Benvenuti and welcome! We are Loyola University of Chicago’s European residential campus with nearly 65 years of excellence in study abroad and 500 years of Jesuit tradition.

As a Loyola Rome student, you will join both our tight-knit and caring community as well as our expansive network of alumni and distinguished faculty and staff. Together, we are committed to changing our world for the better.

A transformative international education

Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide a transformational international education. Inspired by this mission and the understanding it fosters, we are deeply committed to student-centered teaching and learning excellence on a global scale. These experiences open minds, broaden perspectives, and deepen our compassion for others.

Our 25,000 alumni represent a vibrant community: including, activists, diplomats, Hollywood filmmakers and actors, priests, nuns and church leaders, executives, politicians, activists and grassroots organizers, social workers, teachers, and many others. Each continues to shape our world, guided by the enduring Jesuit values cultivated during their time with us.

Jesuit values in a global context

Loyola Rome offers an inclusive and welcoming environment, where students have the space for personal growth, spirituality, and reflection. We inspire our students to uphold the Jesuit values of social responsibility and justice, seeking to remove unjust barriers in society and to care for our common home. Through a steady offering of both academic and community events, we honor Ignatius’ call to translate knowledge into action, using our education in service to humanity.

The city is our classroom

Here, academic excellence is not confined to four walls; it extends through the entire city. Students engage with every facet of the Eternal City through the interdisciplinary study of art and philosophy, business and global health, music, history and theology, social and behavioral sciences, the natural sciences and architecture, Italian language, archeology, ethics, and literature. Nearly all of our students are engaged in at least one high-impact learning experience, allowing them to peel back the many layers of Rome: ancient, medieval, renaissance, baroque, and modern.

Becoming true travelers

Travel is another indispensable pillar of the Loyola Rome experience. We encourage our students to move beyond the mindset of a tourist and become true travelers: individuals who immerse themselves in unfamiliar cultures, challenge their own comfort zones, and welcome diverse viewpoints. We curate unique travel opportunities that demand critical analysis and global reflection, cultivating a truly global approach to your life, education, and career.

Your lives will be forever changed by your experiences, studies and the people you meet at Loyola Rome!
