Between fiction and reality
On Wednesday, 18 March, the Loyola Rome community joined to listen to the panel “Mafias in Films: Between Fiction and Reality”. Dr Donato Santeramo: Professor of Semiotics at Queen’s University, and Antonio Nicaso, historian and leading expert on criminal organizations, uncovered the real-life elements of the Mafia in the cultural fabric of Italy, highlighting how representations of criminal organizations in film and television have shaped contemporary ideas of Italians in the collective imagination.

A broader understanding of global health care
Every fall semester, a group of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students from the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing attend Loyola Rome. Led by a rotating professor from Chicago, the students in the Global Health Program enhance their education as health professionals beyond the borders of a U.S. classroom by examining the global health system. Sophomore Brayden Diethelm, who studied in Rome in the fall of 2025, reflects on his semester and how his experience deepened his understanding of the nursing profession.

Helping others and traveling the world: Following Pope Leo's footsteps
Junior Ines Santos reflects on her experience at the papal audience and finds inspiration from Pope Leo's life and work during her study abroad experience. A large group of Loyola Rome students attended the audience with an LUC flag and when the Pope passed by and saw the university flag, he pointed and smiled, building a deep connection with the students.

The spirit of pilgrimage in Assisi
Loyola Rome has a long tradition of sending students on pilgrimage to Assisi. This year Dr Deborah Sawyer, Professor of Theology, accompanied students on a two-day pilgrimage to the town of St Francis, where they visited the main churches and religious sites, and had opportunities for spiritual reflection and prayer.

Film maker Michele Rho presented his documentary about the world's first restaurant inside a prison to Loyola Rome community on Tuesday evening, April 9th. "Benvenuti in Galera" touches on themes of incarceration, the condition of prisoners and their right to work and dignity.

Stones in the pond: Rule of Law for Development students at Loyola Rome
"Be the stone in the pond and see how your actions can create a significant impact". This was the message that the students of Loyola's Rule of Law for Development program gave Loyola Rome undergraduates on Tuesday evening, 19 February. This LUC program – housed at the Loyola Rome - focuses on tackling critical development challenges around the world and addresses the complex and growing international rule of law and development field.

Hospitality and hardship: The two sides of food in Puglia
During the fall semester, Student Life staff accompanied a group of students on a three-day odyssey through the beauty and culture of Puglia. September 6th represents what would have been our founder’s 100th birthday. In commemoration of John Felice, the Loyola Rome community commemorated our director emeritus with a ceremony at the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument in Piazza Venezia, Rome.

On Friday, October 21, the Loyola Rome community harvested nearly 1,000 pounds of olives which yielded 50 liters “Olio Felice". The annual olive harvest is part of a broader campus initiative for food systems and environmental sustainability education, in response to Pope Francis’ call to be stewards of creation and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
