Student Services
Fueling students’ drive to succeed
In returning to school to complete her bachelor’s degree, Jessica Dent (BA ’23) didn’t want to compromise. A single mother, she needed flexibility, convenience, and guidance to balance her responsibilities as a parent with her ambitions as a student.
With the support of the Student Services team at SCPS, Dent excelled on her academic journey en route to earning her degree in applied psychology. She has since excelled in a project manager role for a Chicago-based media production company dedicated to sharing relatable stories of healing and inspiration across various mediums.
A senior academic advisor at SCPS, Uriel Robles meets many students like Dent. While these scholars are eager to return to school, expand their mind, and leverage higher education to unlock new professional opportunities, they hold pragmatic concerns about completing their studies. They juggle hefty home and career responsibilities. They fret over finances. They worry about completing their studies.
Student Services aims to strip away any angst, providing students the access and information they need to be comfortable and confident in their pursuit of a degree or certificate.
“It’s understandable students have concerns about returning to school. It can prompt anxiety and fears,” Robles acknowledges. “Our mission on the Student Services team is to help students feel supported and reassured in the courageous decision they’ve made.”
The support arrives before students ever enroll at SCPS.
Recruitment coordinators walk prospective students through everything involved with starting at Loyola, such as determining if any existing college credits might be transferred over, managing costs, and considering the appropriate format and pace for each student’s education.
The Student Services team also provides thorough and individualized guidance around educational expenses. They highlight both internal and external scholarships and grants and identify various ways students might fund their education.
Academic advisors like Robles, meanwhile, work directly with students to identify courses and chart a clear course to graduation. Along the way, advisors provide
resources and case management to support students’ academic progress and well-being, consistently advocating for students and championing their progress.
Through ongoing communications, Student Services ensures students never miss a key deadline, whether around applying for financial aid or registration.
“We focus on providing a high-touch level of support, getting to know our students, and moving on this journey alongside them,” Robles says. “This feeds into their self-determination and confidence and translates into success at Loyola.”
