| Description: |
From Classroom to Cortex is an immersive part-time elective (one week of elective credit) designed for first-and second-year medical students that bridges foundational neuroscience education with real-world clinical neurosurgery. Through interactive sessions led by neurosurgeons and neuroscience specialists, students will explore clinically relevant neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, and neurology within the context of patient care and surgical decision-making. Each module pairs a faculty member with a subspecialty-focused discussion topic followed by hands-on experiences that enhance and reinforce key anatomical and clinical concepts. The course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the nervous system, introduce the breadth of careers within neurosurgery and neurosciences, demonstrate the technical skills used in neurosurgery, and foster early mentorship and professional development in academic medicine. By integrating foundational science with operative and clinical applications, the elective will help students appreciate how neuroscience knowledge translates from the classroom to the cortex and ultimately to patient care. |
| Method of Evaluation: | Students will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis according to the following components. Students will receive individualized formative feedback from faculty and residents midway through the elective regarding participation, clinical reasoning, procedural skills, and progress on their scholarly project. This feedback is intended to identify strengths, address areas for improvement, and guide continued development during the remainder of the course. Students will be encouraged to incorporate this feedback into subsequent course activities and their final scholarly presentation. A. Attendance and participation in course activities (30%) B. Participation in reading discussions and scholarly inquiry (10%) C. Completion and quality of structured abstract submission (30%) D. Final oral presentation at the Classroom to Cortex Research Symposium (30%) |
