Description: |
This elective involves a comprehensive overview of sports medicine under the direct supervision of a family medicine physician in a private practice setting. The student will evaluate patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic medical issues and be prepared to diagnose and manage common sports related issues in the family medicine setting. The course consists of traditional family medicine, as well as training room clinics at local area schools. Additional time may be available at various rehabilitation centers and orthopedic offices in the area where the student may work with orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. In winter months, the elective is 50% sports medicine and 50% primary care, and during summer months, it is approximately 80% sports medicine and 20% primary care. SITE: |
Method of Evaluation: | Satisfactory completion of the elective will depend on meeting these conditions: 1. A satisfactory evaluation from the site instructor, using competency related goals and objectives. The site instructor will complete an evaluation based on knowledge, attitude, and competence. 2. A patient/clinical experience log. This can be done as a daily log or clinical diary. 3. A one page double-spaced summary describing the elective experience. 4. Pass a 10-question final exam. |
