Description:

This elective serves as an advanced dermatology course for the medical student committed to a career in academic dermatology with a particular interest in inpatient consultant medicine. The three primary goals are: 1) To solidify and expand on a solid foundation of dermatological clinical experience and knowledge, 2) to provide experience diagnosing and treating dermatologic conditions necessitating inpatient care, 3) to encourage the correlation of dermatologic clinical and pathological findings and 4) to provide an opportunity for oral presentations and written reports on interesting dermatologic cases. This elective is intended to be an intensive inpatient consult rotation for fourth year medical students pursuing a career in dermatology with an expectation that students function much like a sub-intern with an increased level of responsibility and independence. This rotation serves as a unique opportunity to correlate the dermatologic experience from the inpatient clinical setting with the pathological findings through review of skin biopsies. Students will have the opportunity to gather a history and physical through an initial inpatient encounter; work with the inpatient dermatology consult resident to discuss differential diagnoses, perform skin biopsies and cultures, and make treatment recommendations; present at the monthly dermatology grand rounds conference; and prepare a written case report.

Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation is based on clinical performance, oral presentation, written case report, and evidence of scholarly conduct. A grade of H, HP, P, or F will be determined at the final discretion of the clerkship faculty sponsor.
