Prime Minister Philip E. Davis of the Bahamas visits the Baumhart Center

Prime Minister Philip E. Davis of the Bahamas joined us at the Baumhart Center for a Forum on Climate Change on September 11, 2023. Prime Minister Davis is a global voice on climate challenges and needed actions as rising emissions alter our shared environment. As an educational organization committed to social impact and environmental justice—both locally in Chicago and on a global scale—we were honored to host this event. 

As the leader of an island nation facing rising seas and powerful storms, Prime Minister Davis brought a deeply knowledgeable and highly personal perspective to the discussion. Natural disasters in the Bahamas, exemplified by devastating hurricanes Dorian and Matthew, continue to inflict severe harm on vulnerable regions. Davis reminds us that environmental justice necessitates the active participation of all individuals. Davis implored audiences to immerse themselves, emphasizing that “we need voices, we need activists to tell everyone that the time for talk is over.” 

Joining Prime Minister Davis in this compelling conversation was our distinguished moderator Karen Weigert, who also serves as director of the Baumhart Center. Additionally, we were privileged to have Dr. Chuck Knapp, vice president of conservation research at the Shedd Aquarium, and Dr. Ryan Burg, principal business analyst at ComEd, as esteemed panelists. Knapp and Burg provided critical insights into how businesses and social enterprises play an important role in addressing climate change and mitigating climate risks. A key priority shared by all panelists was exploring paths to decarbonization, including solutions like understanding and optimizing the grid and investing in renewable energy sources like solar power.

In a world where the urgency of addressing environmental challenges has never been more apparent, the Baumhart Center remains steadfast in our commitment to facilitating discussions and partnerships that propel us toward a future of environmental equity and sustainability.  

“Action is required now," said Prime Minister Davis. "The question is, what are we going to achieve?” His impassioned words serve as a powerful reminder that together, as a global community, we have the capacity to effect positive change and the time to act is now.
