Dean's Welcome

Peter J. Schraeder, PhD, Professor and Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Loyola University Chicago
Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest of the University’s 14 colleges, schools and institutes. As we have done for over 150 years, we invite you to become active participants in the intellectual exploration of the computational sciences, engineering, fine and performing arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. We also invite you to join us in the on-going search for excellence that Loyola has fostered, not only in Chicago, but also on its campus in Rome (Italy) as well as at dozens of University-sponsored study abroad sites around the world! Your encounter with our outstanding faculty, both inside and outside the classroom, will make your undergraduate education at Loyola truly a transformative experience.
Home to the departments that anchor the University’s Core Curriculum, the College seeks to prepare all of Loyola’s students to think critically, to engage the world of the 21st-century at ever deepening levels, and to become caring and compassionate individuals. Our students seek a more just world. They view service to others not just as one option among many, but as a constitutive dimension of their very being. In the truest sense of the Jesuit ideal, our graduates strive to be “men and women for others.”
I invite you to engage one or more of our many departmental or interdisciplinary program majors or minors and to consider how being a student at Loyola University Chicago can help you attain your highest aspirations and desires.
