Gregor von Laszewski

Gregor von Laszewski received his Master's Degree from the University of Bonn, Germany, in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1996. From 1996 to 2009, he held positions at Argonne National Laboratory, serving as a scientist and a fellow of the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago. During his tenure at ANL. During a sabbatical from ANL, he was an Associate Professor and Director of an institution at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he served as an Assistant Director in the Digital Science Center at Indiana University and as Chief Architect of FutureGrid. Currently, he holds an appointment as a Research Professor at the University of Virginia. He is teaching a course on Cloud Computing, DevOps, and AI at Loyola University Chicago in Fall 2026. 
Highlights from Previous and Current Projects
  • Genesis: He participates in the DOE Genesis project.
  • Cloudmesh-AI: Currently, converts the original Cloudmesh toolkit to integrate AI services, including LLM hosting on HPC and cloud services. 
  • AI Benchmarking: Participates in the MLCommons Science Working group on issues relating to AI Benchmarking. 
  • Cloudmesh: Initiated the Cloudmesh project, a maintained hybrid multicloud toolkit facilitating cloud computing across various IaaS platforms, including OpenStack, AWS, Azure, Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes.
  • XSEDE & TeraGrid Leadership: Provided leadership for virtual cluster interfaces with the San Diego Supercomputing Center on XSEDE Comet and served as co-PI for developing scientific impact metrics spanning XSEDE and TeraGrid.
  • FutureGrid: Served as the architect of FutureGrid, pioneering early cloud platforms in U.S. academia.
  • Java Commodity Grid Kit: Initiated and led the Java CoG Kit, establishing the foundational basis for numerous Grid-related projects, including the Globus Toolkit, and introducing early browser-controlled interfaces for file transfers.
  • Early Metacomputing: Developed one of the earliest client-side Metacomputers connecting multiple supercomputing centers, serving as a precursor to modern Grid computing.
