Computer Science (BS)

Majors

Computer Science B.S.

The B.S. in Computer Science provides a rigorous balance of theoretical foundations and applied practice — algorithms, programming languages, systems, and software design — built to hold its value throughout a career, not just a first job. Students design and build software systems, analyze algorithms for correctness and efficiency, and develop the mathematical reasoning that underlies modern computing.

Where AI fits in

Artificial intelligence is a core and growing part of that foundation: students study machine learning, deep learning, and data science alongside — not instead of — the algorithms and systems knowledge that make those tools work. Faculty research spans this range directly, from media forensics and misinformation detection, to graph mining and reinforcement learning, to large language models applied to clinical diagnosis. Ethics and responsible computing are a required part of every student's training, not an elective add-on.

Students can pursue research with faculty, an AI track within the major, and one of three AI-focused minors — including an interdisciplinary option developed with the Department of Philosophy.
