bex ya yolk is a visual artist, designer, and professor based in Chicago, IL. yolk received a BFA in Graphic Design from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and an MFA in Visual Communication Design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a full merit scholar. yolk is the founder of THUNGRY— a publishing initiative and artists’ book bindery complicating traditional ways of Book building and semantics through experimentation + queering praxis. yolk has received grant endowment from the Atlanta Contemporary, Codex International Biennial Artists' Book Fair and Symposium, the College Book Art Association, Secret Riso Club, VCUarts Adjunct Faculty Research, and the Judith Alexander Foundation. They have been invited as an artist-in-residence by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Northeastern Illinois University, ACRE, Ox-bow School of Art, Aviário Studio, and the Chicago Artist Coalition. yolk has held faculty positions at the Pratt Institute, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, VCUarts, and DePaul University.
