Frederick Lowe, D.M.
Senior Lecturer/Director of Music
Dr. Frederick Lowe (he/him) is a teaching professor at Loyola University Chicago where he serves as the Director of the Music program within the department of Fine and Performing Arts. In addition, he conducts the Wind Ensemble, conducts the Commencement Wind Ensemble, prepares the pit orchestra for the spring musical, and teaches courses in the art of music listening, introductory conducting, and applied conducting. In addition to his duties at Loyola University Chicago, Dr. Lowe is the conductor of the Palatine (IL) Concert Band, an ensemble established in 1875 that has been in continuous operation since 1955, and features 75 musicians playing the finest concert band repertoire.
Dr. Lowe earned his bachelor of music degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, studying clarinet with Deborah Chodacki, and serving as a graduate assistant with the Michigan Marching Band. He then became assistant band director at Lake Zurich (IL) High School, where he directed the concert, symphonic and marching bands and taught music theory and electronic music composition. Upon leaving Lake Zurich, he earned his master and doctor of music degrees in conducting at Northwestern University, studying with primary teacher Dr. Mallory Thompson. While at Northwestern, Dr. Lowe guest conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. He also assisted with the “Wildcat” Marching Band and the men’s basketball pep band. Dr. Lowe has participated in conducting symposia with conductors including H. Robert Reynolds, Jerry Junkin, Craig Kirchhoff, Allan McMurray, Larry Rachleff, John Whitwell, and Rodney Winther.
Dr. Lowe has served as guest conductor with the Singapore Festival Winds as well as the McHenry County (IL) Youth Orchestras. He has judged Illinois High School Association and Illinois Grade School Music Association music festivals in the Chicago area, as well as the State of the Art Catholic High School Band contest, and is in demand as a high school band clinician. His music analyses are published across four volumes of the GIA Publications series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band.
