Are you ready for the 2nd Renaissance

Are you ready for the 2nd Renaissance

"Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?"

I love this one liner. Sometimes we are left speechless by a tone deaf or thoughtless comment made by others. One of our FBC coaches, Leigh Rocklin, reminded me last week that many people are viewing the weeks before and after the election with trepidation, uncertainty, and fear. And with those high emotions, thoughtless comments may follow. As leaders of businesses, communities, and families we have an opportunity to influence and calm the rhetoric by listening and meeting others with kindness. It is simple but not easy. It requires level five leadership skills.

Some of the greatest CEOs and family leaders model level five leadership. So does Ted Lasso. If you haven’t caught this sweet, hilarious, and remarkable show on Apple TV yet—and if you’re looking for a level five leader role model—I recommend you check it out.

Are you ready for the 2nd Renaissance?

We are so excited to have global futurist and strategist Anders Sörman-Nilsson as keynote for our November 12th Member Conference! Check out his short video message about what to expect!

Attend our virtual program and you will learn:

  • the paradigm shifts in customer behavior and values unleashed by the pandemic
  • the STEEP (socio-cultural, technological, economic, environmental, and political) Mega-trends influencing the world beyond the virus
  • how to scenario plan for future disruptions and use trend analysis as a key input for family business continuity
  • why family businesses are now “media companies with a license” in older industries and how to ensure the sustainability of our brands and legacy
  • how to take advantage of the emerging 2nd Renaissance of human creativity and use it for successful succession planning

Loyola FBC members will be joined by family business center members from the University of Louisville and Loyola Marymount for this 3-hour morning program, which includes breakout sessions and a live Q&A with Anders.

We hope you will join us on November 12th!

Feeling blue? I made you a playlist!

Music has the power to lift our spirit and change our attitudes. What are you listening to? I’ve got some “go to” songs that can lift your mood. I like to put these in my line-up as a defense against the never-ending stream of “all bad news, all the time” that's swirling around us right now. Please send me your favorites and I’ll share them with the rest of the “family." Check out my happy place for your ears.

Meet your FBC Board

Ben Juday joined the FBC Board in 2019. When you have a family as large as Ben’s it can be hard to personally meet everyone. In fact, prior to his board service, I'd spent more time with Ben’s wife Jenna, who came through the FBC’s Family Business Stewardship Institute, and served on the family council. Ben’s wry sense of humor and entrepreneurial perspective is always appreciated. Every family business must evolve and reinvent itself over generations to stay relevant; the spirit of entrepreneurship runs strong in him and his generation. Thank you for your service to the Center and its members, Ben!

What is your full name, company name, generation and role in your family business?
Benjamin Juday from IDEAL Industries, Inc. I'm 4th generation and I am on our Family Council. I am a Junior Board Member and I am also part of our Family Leader Development Program

What is the size of your company?
$250M - $1B

What year did you join the FBC board and what is your current role?
I joined in 2019 and I serve on the membership committee.

How long has your family and company been a member of Loyola Family Business Center
Since almost the very beginning!

Why is family business important
Family-owned businesses are important because they have the freedom to pursue long-term business visions. Most public companies are so focused on next quarter’s financial results that long-term investment becomes a difficult proposition. This family business mindset can bring real value to our larger economy.

Which living person do you most admire?
Barack Obama

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Having a happy marriage and raising 2 kids who are enjoying life.

Which family ancestor or family figure do you most admire and/or identify with and why?
I relate to my great grandfather who founded our company. I have started and sold 3 companies over the last 15 years and I enjoy building something up and exploring new ideas, just like he did.

What would you like FBC members to know about you?
I enjoy fishing, the outdoors, and fixing up old buildings. I enjoy being involved in the world of family business and sharing my trials and tribulations with other families.

But wait, there's more!

The FBC has always provided additional resources to support your business and your family. Now your membership can be used to access even more resources for the supply chain / procurement / logistics / inventory professionals in your organization.

The Supply Chain and Sustainability Center (SCSC) is one of our sister centers within the Business Leadership Hub. The SCSC's offerings include:

The SCSC also collaborates with partners including ASCM, EPA SmartWay, and ISM-Chicago and the Family Business Center.

“Supply chain and sustainability have never been more important or visible,” says Harry Haney, director of the Supply Chain and Sustainability Center. “We are very excited to offer discounted services to interested Family Business Center members including sustainable supply chain operations, responsible leadership, strategy, and more.”

This is what a leader looks like

Congratulations to our intrepid, resilient, fun, and sassy group of Next Generation Leadership Institute graduates! They demonstrated grace and grit as COVID-19 restrictions moved them into a virtual classroom. Thank you and good luck to Drew Allen, Griffin Hahn, Brad Holland, Arron Jackowski, Michael Lemar, Sherri Miles, Brandon Passage, Tim Reimer, Jacob Wyffels, and David Yep!

Daring greatly

The next time you hear from me, we’ll have traversed Halloween, a U.S. election, a full moon, and maybe a few scary things that go bump in the night. Let’s meet these experiences as our best selves, daring greatly, as Brene Brown urges us. Throw back those shoulders and show your families, your employees, and your communities, how to do these hard things with grace, humility, courage. and kindness.

As always, feel free to call or write. We’d love to hear from you.  Loyola is here for you.
