It's quiet uptown...

It

If you’re like me and millions of other Americans, you took some time over the weekend to watch the film version of the smash Broadway show Hamilton. In addition to enjoying the masterful performances, music, and story, I was also struck by the lessons in leadership.

We are not living through a Revolution but like Hamilton and his fellow leaders, we are living with a lot of uncertainty about the next few months and year. The themes of resiliency, persistence, and the power of leadership resonate.

Planning and programming in a pandemic

July is usually a quiet month for member programs because it is typically the beginning of a new planning cycle at Loyola’s FBC. But planning has been so disrupted by the coronavirus that the script hasn’t just been flipped, it’s been torn in two. And still we must plan.

This week I found a short 6-minute read on planning in times of uncertainty that offered some help. Gautam Lohia pulls together the current best thinking in this engaging and practical read. And we’ve added a few events this month that you might find helpful and of interest.

Young, scrappy, and hungry

We see all types of leadership styles in our Next Generation Leadership Institute. The gift of this program is that it helps identify and nurture the unique strengths of each participant. Next Gens that come through the program become the business leaders they are meant to be and learn to appreciate the leadership styles of others. If you're interested in learning more about the program and its benefits, please join our upcoming info session on Wednesday, July 22 at 12:00 p.m. CDT.

It's here! It's finally here!

Hot off the presses! The IFERA team of researchers (including our own Andrew Keyt) has released part 1 of the findings from their global survey: Crisis Management in the Family Business: Key Learnings from COVID-19.

Check out some of the early findings here.

Speaking of global...

Family businesses are alike all over the world. Whether you’re in Australia, Dubai, Italy, or the U.S. the pandemic has brought out our best and sometimes our worst. Women in Family Business (WIFB) is a global resource and sharing platform for women involved in the family enterprise. They host a podcast featuring interviews with some of the most influential women in family business across the globe. This week Susanne Bransgrove and Ramia Marielle El Agamy discuss the current COVID-19 situation, its effects on family businesses, and how families can cope with the surmounting changes. Listen here.

What are you doing next Thursday?

Please join the Family Business Center on Thursday, July 16 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.mCDT. to learn about the Main Street Funding Program. Many family businesses were able to secure PPP funding, but as COVID-19 continues, Main Street Funding might be needed. Our special guest, Dan Murphy of BMO will take us through the program and answer your questions in this one-hour webinar. The broadcast is free but you’ll need to register here.

A is for awareness, B is for business, C is for courage

Please join the Family Business Center on Tuesday, July 28 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. CDT for an intimate discussion about how family businesses can respond authentically to the very real issues around racism and social injustice. If you are curious or are seeking a forum for open, safe, and honest discussion, this program is designed for you.

We partnered with Reimagine Development Organization, Inc.—which focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion—to help us organize this conversation. The session will be led by Tanjia Coleman, PhD who is also a faculty member from the Baumhart Center for Social Enterprise and Responsibility.

There is no fee to register but participation will be limited. The broadcast will be moderated by Andrew Keyt, Clinical Professor in Family Business at Loyola. Register for the webinar here.

Lean on me

The Fourth of July weekend has come and gone. Summer is here. This is the long haul; now is the time to work a little harder to help each other out. If you’re looking for some help and would like to connect with other family business members, let me know. In addition to peer groups and calls, we pair members to mentor and help one another.

Thank you for hanging in there. What you’re doing is hard. We are watching you and cheering you on. Loyola is here for you.
