Alexandra is a 2019 Master in Public Policy graduate.

Shaping Interconnectedness

As a key member of the City of Chicago's CityKey program, Alexandra plays a pivotal role in providing Chicago residents with a multifaceted municipal identification card that serves as more than just a form of identification.

The CityKey, a 4-in-1 card, acts as an identification, CTA Ventra Card, Library Card, and a Chicago RX card for prescription discounts. It is a tool designed to empower all Chicago residents, regardless of age, housing status, criminal record, immigration status, or gender identity.

Transitioning from an aldermanic intern for the 49th Ward to her current role, Alexandra's commitment to public service deepened. Her typical day involves overseeing mobile events, ensuring the smooth operation of CityKey services in collaboration with other City agencies and community groups.

Alexandra highlights the value of direct service, noting that it allows her to witness the immediate impact of the CityKey program on people's lives. Alexandra's journey from a background in interior architecture to public policy underscores the interconnectedness of policy and the built environment, shaping her understanding of their tangible consequences on communities.

"I switched industries entirely when deciding to get a degree in Public Policy. I got my undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture and spent the first few years of my career in the architectural and commercial lighting design industries. The concept of space has always fascinated me. Whether it be the layout of a public transit system or the placement of buildings in a city grid - space is an integral factor in how we experience the world around us. I realized that policy and the built environment go hand in hand and have tangible consequences for people’s lives."

Alexandra encourages students to explore courses aligned with their interests. Her emphasis on being open to opportunities, networking, and leveraging Chicago's rich policy landscape reflects a proactive approach to maximizing the graduate school experience.

"Chicago is an amazing city for policy. There are so many organizations to get involved with in our own backyard. There are speakers and seminars happening all the time. Taking advantage of these, usually free, resources is a great way to get involved in the community and get more of a feel for what you are interested in. They are also a great chance to network and meet people organically."
