Content Guidlines
Social Media Content Guidelines
Every Loyola-affiliated social media account represents the University and shapes how people experience Loyola online. Whether you manage a school, department, program, office, or University account, your content should be intentional, relevant, and high quality
The goal is not to post more. It's to post better.
Before You Post
Ask yourself:
- Who is this for?
- Why would they care?
- Is it useful, interesting, or engaging?
- Is social media the right place for this message?
Strong social content informs, engages, inspires, builds community, or tells a story.
Not every event, announcement, or initiative needs a post. Something happening, or someone asking for a post, doesn't automatically make it good social media content.
What works and What Doesn't
Focus on:
| Post this | Not this |
|---|---|
| People | Flyers |
| Experiences | Promotion |
| Stories | Announcements |
Skip Content That is
- Poorly produced, or hard to see or hear
- Relevant only to a very small audience
- Overly promotional
- Repetitive, or posted just to fill space
- Missing a clear purpose, story, or takeway
If your audience wouldn't stop to engage with it, rethink how, or whether, to post it.
Make Every Post Accessible
Accessibility is required for every Loyola account. Every post should work for everyone, including people who use screen readers, watch without sound, or have low vision.
- Write alt text for every image. Describe what matters in the image. Don't start with "image of".
- Caption every video. Use burned-in captions or the platform's captions, and check them for accuracy before you post. Auto-captions are starting point, not a final product.
- Don't put key information only in an image. Include dates, locations, and links in the post text. A photo of a flyer on its own is not accessible.
- Capitalize each word in hashtags, like #LoyolaChicago, so screen readers read them correctly.
- Use emojis sparingly. Screen readers read each one aloud. Never use emoji as bullets or in place of words.
- Keep on-screen text readable. Use strong contrast and a large size, and leave it on screen long enough to read.
- Avoid flashing content. Nothing should flash more than three times per second.
Photo Standards
- Use clear, high-quality images.
- Show authentic people, moments, and experiences.
- Make sure photos are well lit, in focus, and thoughtfully composed.
- Avoid heavy filters or editing.
- Choose your strongest images. Don't post everything you captured.
- follow University privacy policies when featuring students and other people.
Video Standards
- For reels, TikTok, and Stories, film vertically (9:16).
- Plan before you film. Know the story or message you want to tell.
- Keep footage stable, well lit, and focused on the subject.
- Capture a variety of shots and angels.
- If you're recording audio or voiceover, film somewhere quiet and speak clearly and confidently.
- Keep editing simple. Limit effects, filters, transitions, and on-screen text.
- Add accurate captions to every video.
- Use only licensed music. Institutional accounts should use the platform's commercial sound library, because most trending audio isn't cleared for business use.
Sound Like Loyola
Every post should feel connected, purposeful, and grounded. Show real people doing work in Chicago and around the world. Use your official Loyola social tile, and follow the Editorial Style Guide and Brand Identity standards.
Quality Matters
High-quality content doesn't require expensive equipment or a big production. It does require intention. Before you post, ask one final question:
Would I actually stop scrolling to watch, read, or engage with this?
Every post contributes to the larger Loyola story. Make sure yours adds something to it.
Use authentic photography and video. Do not use AI-generated or substantially AI-manipulated images or videos that could misrepresent Loyola people, places, events or experiences. AI-generated visuals should not be used in promotional materials such as flyers, event announcements, speaker announcements or other marketing content.
