Admission Requirements

Students are admitted either as classified (enrolled in a degree program) or unclassified. In either case, please consult the general regulations of the Graduate School which govern all applications to graduate programs in the Department of History. A student will be admitted to the Ph.D. program directly after completing the B.A. only if his or her undergraduate record is outstanding. Those who apply to the Ph.D. program with the M.A. already completed will receive credit for up to thirty hours of coursework with the approval of the Graduate School. Students are admitted for both fall and spring semester, but applications for merit awards are considered only once each year. Those applying for merit awards must submit all materials by Jan. 1.

Applicants must have a B.A. degree from an accredited institution. They should have a minimum "B" undergraduate average overall and in history courses. Normally, students are expected to have twenty-four hours of advanced undergraduate coursework in history. Applicants for the doctoral program should have a minimim "B+" average in any graduate work previously completed. Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (general test) are necessary before the applicant is admitted.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination before they can be considered for admission. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 is required for admission.
