The Honors in History program is not the same as collegiate honors, and you do not have to belong to collegiate honors in order to participate in this program.
The qualifications for the program are as follows:
*history major
*at least junior status
*3.67 GPA in history courses
*3.33 GPA
The above required GPAs include courses taken elsewhere if the credits
have been transferred.
The requirements of the program are:
*Register for the Honors Tutorial (History 397). The Honors Tutorial
is offered only in the Fall Semester. The Tutorial involves writing
a research paper, based on primary sources, of about 20-30 pages.
The results of this research are presented in a short oral presentation
at a gala finale class to which friends, family, and other faculty
are invited.
(Please note the Honors Tutorial no longer substitutes for the
Senior Colloquium. In fact, there no longer is a Senior Colloquium.
History 291 Junior Colloquium is required of all majors,
including Honors students.)
*Register for an Honors Colloquium (History 396: Variable Title).
An Honors Colloquium is offered in the Spring Semester at the Lake
Shore Campus on various topics chosen by the professor.
Some small points:
1) Either History 396 or History 397 may be counted as an elective
so that there is a total of 13 courses for the Honors Program-one
course beyond the regular major requirement.
2) Newberry Library Undergraduate Seminars, when taught by history
faculty, may be counted for History 291, 396 or 397 (3 hrs.
credit).
Upon completion of the program, students attaining Honors in History
will have this noted on their college transcripts and will receive
a silver honors key from the department at the Awards Convocation
held each December and May.
