INFORMATION:
Course Description:
This course
provides three hours credit for students engaged in history related internships
in the public and private sectors; and it fulfills the Civic Engagement and
Leadership Values requirement of the core curriculum. Outcome: Students will be able to obtain
an internship position, to learn on-the-job from an experienced practitioner in
a wide variety of public and private sector settings, to draw links between
their present situation and historical research, and to develop critical
thinking and communication skills.
Interns work for a minimum of five hours per week in an internship position jointly agreed upon by the student and the internship director. Interns are also required to attend seminar meetings, keep a weekly journal, and produce a paper or presentation related to the internship experience.
Course Prerequisites
Students who have completed 9 credits of history by
the time the internship has begun and have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0
overall. Students must complete an
application and be interviewed by the internship director prior to
admission.
Students need the permission of the internship coordinator in
order to register.
Course Guidelines:
1. Finding an internship
is the joint responsibility of the student and the Coordinator of the
Undergraduate Internship Program.
2. The internship generally should take
place outside of

internship must entail a high percentage of professional tasks that make use of
either the knowledge or skills taught by the history major. Clerical duties may
be a part of the work regime, but they must not be the bulk of the experience.
4. Ordinarily, the internship will not be a paid experience.
5. Before an
internship is fully arranged, a written position description must be agreed upon
by the student, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Internship Program, and the
institution involved.
6. A specific individual at the internship site must be
identified as the intern's supervisor.
7. The Internship Contract should be
filled out and signed by all parties.
