INFORMATION:

Course Description:
This course provides three hours credit for students engaged in history related internships in the public and private sectors; and it fulfills the Civic Engagement and Leadership Values requirement of the core curriculum.  Outcome: Students will be able to obtain an internship position, to learn on-the-job from an experienced practitioner in a wide variety of public and private sector settings, to draw links between their present situation and historical research, and to develop critical thinking and communication skills.

Interns work for a minimum of five hours per week in an internship position jointly agreed upon by the student and the internship director. Interns are also required to attend seminar meetings, keep a weekly journal, and produce a paper or presentation related to the internship experience.

Course Prerequisites
Students who have completed 9 credits of history by the time the internship has begun and have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall.  Students must complete an application and be interviewed by the internship director prior to admission.
Students need the permission of the internship coordinator in order to register.

Course Guidelines:

1. Finding an internship is the joint responsibility of the student and the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Internship Program.
2. The internship generally should take place outside of Loyola University and with the involvement of another organization or institution such as a business, government agency, or historical society. Internships internal to Loyola University are possible.
3. The internship must entail a high percentage of professional tasks that make use of either the knowledge or skills taught by the history major. Clerical duties may be a part of the work regime, but they must not be the bulk of the experience.
4. Ordinarily, the internship will not be a paid experience.
5. Before an internship is fully arranged, a written position description must be agreed upon by the student, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Internship Program, and the institution involved.
6. A specific individual at the internship site must be identified as the intern's supervisor.
7. The Internship Contract should be filled out and signed by all parties.

5) Schedule an appointment with Dr. Harold Platt, Internship Coordinator to discuss your application: 773-508-2237 or hplatt@luc.edu
