Loyola is committed to wide faculty participation in the decision making process related to initial appointments, promotions, and the granting of tenure. This commitment includes the continuing development and assessment of standards as well as procedures and means to secure that participation.

In all matters, Loyola seeks to achieve both the fairest possible treatment of every individual and the University's intrinsic interest in improving the quality of each school, college, department or other academic unit and excellence in scholarship as accomplished through the faculty member's general responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research/scholarship, professional practice (if applicable) and service.

When can/must I apply for promotion?
All faculty can view their appointment and promotion dates in the Faculty Information System (FIS) in the Health Sciences Campus portal. Log into the portal and click on the Faculty Information System link to view your FIS profile. Under "Demographics" link, find academic track, initial appointment date, expected mid-tenure review date, and the expected tenure date.

Non-Tenure-Track Faculty
In both the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the Stritch School of Medicine, 5 years is the typical minimum amount of time a faculty member must have been in rank before applying for promotion. Use the 'Rank Date" listed in FIS to determine your eligibility for applying for promotion.

Tenure Track Faculty
For faculty in the Stritch School of Medicine, use the Stritch School of Medicine tenure tracking chart to determine your review year. Faculty in the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing should use the Marcella Niehoff Tenure Tracking Chart to determine their next review year. For Tenure-Track Faculty, the review year is the academic year in which your promotion and tenure application would need to be reviewed. For example, if you were hired in the Stritch School of Medicine at the beginning of AY 2015-2016, you could apply for promotion and tenure as early as AY 2019-2020. Hence, you would need to submit your dossier for review in the summer/fall of AY 2021. Use the "Rank Date" and "Expected Tenure Date" listed in FIS to determine your eligibility for applying for promotion and/or tenure.

Can I apply early for promotion and/or tenure?
Yes, although consideration requires the applications to be "exceptional," in accordance with the individual School's promotion and tenure guidelines. Review your specific School's guidelines for more information. Use the "Rank Date" and "Expected Tenure Date" listed in FIS, as well as the tenure tracking charts to determine your eligibility for applying for promotion and/or tenure.
