Esther Ochang (AA ’26)
Major: Social and Behavioral Sciences (AA) + Nursing (BS)
High School: Loyola Academy
Involvements: Vice President of Black Student Union (BSU) and member of PTK and member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)
How I chose my degree:
I chose Social Behavioral Science with a Pathway to Nursing because I love helping people, and my goal is to become a Labor and Delivery nurse. Being able to support moms and see babies come into the world is something that brings me so much joy, so this pathway makes sense for me.
What professor should a new student absolutely take a class with and why?
A professor I would recommend is Dr. Minerva. She’s very welcoming and makes you feel comfortable in her class. She explains things clearly, cares about her students, and creates a really supportive environment, which is great for new freshmen.
What's the best thing you've done since coming to Arrupe?
The best thing I’ve done since coming to Arrupe was going on a retreat. It gave me the chance to meet new people and really get to know them beyond just names. We connected on a deeper level, and it opened the door for real friendships.
What is some advice you would give an incoming freshman?
Some advice I’d give an incoming freshman is to really use the resources Arrupe offers to their full potential. There’s so much support here, and it makes a big difference. I’d also say to prioritize your studies and stay on top of your work. College gets busy fast, so taking your classes seriously from the start will help you a lot.
What is a moment where you felt like you belonged at Arrupe?
A moment where I felt like I belonged at Arrupe was during an event BSU hosted for Black History Month. People were coming up to share something meaningful about Black history, and I got the chance to speak too. It made me feel heard. Everyone who spoke brought a sense of connection, and that togetherness made me feel like I truly belonged.
