The Loyola University Chicago community mourns the loss of Yvonne El Ashmawi, PhD, clinical associate professor in the School of Education (SOE) and director of the Dual Credit Program in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), who passed away on October 6, 2026.
Yvonne joined the Loyola community in 2015 teaching courses in the undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation program. Her commitment to her students was always evident in her teaching and service, whether as a course instructor, a student advisor, or a mentor to a doctoral student. She spent two years as program chair of the Teaching and Learning graduate program. Yvonne also served as the associate director and director of the Dual Credit Program, where she worked to support local high school students in obtaining college credit for coursework.
Yvonne will be remembered for her willingness to help in all SOE endeavors, her talent for problem solving when new obstacles arose, and her tremendous kindness to colleagues and students. She also showed a continuous and strong commitment to anti-racist pedagogy and social justice-focused teacher preparation.
Please keep Yvonne’s family and friends, the SOE community, and all of the lives she touched in your thoughts and prayers.
