2024 Denkewalter Lecture

The 2024 Denkewalter Lecturer will be Prof. Danna Freedman from The Department of Chemistry at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology.   Prof. Freedman was the recipient of the prestigious ACS 2018 Award in Pure Chemistry. ‌

Topic: "Molecular Color Centers"
The unique combination of atomic-scale tenability, reproducibility, and chemicalspecificity make paramagnetic molecules a paradigm-shifting category of materialsfor quantum information science. Our team imbued molecular qubits with the sameread-out approach as defect-based systems. To achieve this, we envisioned an inversedesign problem whereby we mimicked the electronic structure with an orthogonalphysical structure. Using transition metal chemistry, we designed the ground state, excited states and dynamics based on straightforward ligand field analysis. Bycoupling optical readout with spatial precision, we seamlessly integrated a new classof materials with existing read-out technology. This work has potential in the area ofquantum sensing.

The Reception & Poster Session

A poster presentation and reception is to take place prior to the Denkewalter Lecture, in the foyer outside Flanner Auditorium at 4:00 PM. During the event, Loyola Graduate students will have an opportunity to share information regarding the Chemistry research they have conducted in their respective labs groups.  Pizes will be awarded for posted judeged to be exceptional.
