FAQ

Is it mandatory to attend Orientation?

Yes, attendance is expected for every JD student planning to attend in the fall. You will learn about the School of Law’s policies, student resources, expectations about professionalism, and more, so you are ready for the start of the semester.

What does Orientation cover?

During orientation, you will meet faculty and administrators who will support you throughout your time in law school, whether that’s exploring externships or studying for finals. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet your class tutors and to connect with student organization leaders. Logistics like locker assignments, Loyola IDs, UPass transit cards, and tours of the Corboy Law Center and the Law Library are included. The formal Pledge of Professionalism is administered to mark your entry into the legal profession.

Do I need to bring a laptop?

No, you are encouraged to pack light as space is limited and you will be moving around the building. A phone, water bottle, and personal items will be all that you need.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, business casual attire is appropriate. Comfortable walking shoes with pants, skirts, dresses, and collared shirts, or tops are all suitable. Jackets, light cardigans, and blazers are good choices since the classrooms can sometimes be chilly. You should avoid ripped jeans, leggings, athletic wear, baseball caps, cropped tops, and hoodies or t-shirts with logos.

Will I have an opportunity to meet current students and faculty?

Yes! Student leaders, including members of the Student Bar Association, will be on hand to welcome you and talk about opportunities to get involved in student organizations and other activities. Class tutors for 1L classes are invited to join you for a meal during orientation and a number of faculty members will participate in your orientation experience, either by presenting, by tabling at the Special Programs Open House, and/or by taking part in one or more of the community events offered.

Can I bring friends and family?

Orientation is a student-centered event, and while we encourage you to share your Loyola Law School experiences with friends and family, all of the programming was designed with YOU in mind, so friends and family should stay home for this one.

Do I need to purchase books and materials for my classes during Orientation?

You will receive communications about courses and first assignments in early August and can make arrangements for texts and class materials at that time. We encourage you to get in the habit of checking your Loyola email. While you should have already purchased your textbooks before Orientation, you’re welcome to stop by the bookstore across from the Corboy Law Center to pick up Loyola apparel or accessories if time permits!

Is there anything I need to prepare?

You will experience a “mock” class discussion of A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr during Orientation. Plan to finish the book before Orientation. You can get a copy from your local library, bookstore, or online sellers.

Will breakfast and lunch be provided?

Generally, hot coffee and tea will be available every morning and a light assortment of snacks will be available throughout each day. We suggest you have breakfast before arriving on campus. Grab and go lunches will be provided for students to take to assigned classrooms for lunchtime programming. Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options will be available.
