Orientation

All incoming law students will receive a Loyola email account and access to LOCUS (Loyola’s Online Connection to University Services). If you are considering purchasing a new laptop, please review the recommended specifications.
Is it mandatory to attend Orientation?
Yes, during this time students will receive valuable information about the curriculum and academic advising, expectations about professionalism, and an overview of the School of Law’s policies, communications, and student resources.
What does Orientation cover?
You will have the opportunity to connect with other students and to meet staff and faculty. Locker assignments, Loyola IDs, UPass cards, and tours of the Corboy Law Center and the Law Library will also take place. A useful introduction to the law school’s primary online platforms and webpages, including Sakai, TWEN, the Office of the Registrar, Academic Calendar, Pearson, and more, will take place. All students will take the Pledge of Professionalism to mark their entry into the legal profession.
Do I need to bring a laptop?
No, laptops are not necessary and you will be moving around the building, so pack light. A phone, water bottle, and personal items will be all that you need.
Is there a dress code?
Comfortable, business casual dress is appropriate throughout the day. Walking shoes with pants, skirts, dresses, and collared shirts or tops are all suitable. Jackets, light cardigans, and blazers are good choices as the building can sometimes be chilly. Avoid ripped jeans, leggings, athletic wear, baseball caps, and hoodies or t-shirts with logos.
Will I have an opportunity to meet current students and faculty?
Yes! Student leaders, including members of our Student Bar Association, will be on hand to welcome incoming students and talk to you about opportunities to get involved in student organizations and activities. A number of faculty members will participate in your orientation experience, either by presenting, by tabling at the Special Programs Open House, and/or by taking part in one or more of the community events offered.
Can I bring friends and family?
Orientation is a student-centered event and while we encourage you to share your Loyola Law School experiences with friends and family, all of the programming was designed with YOU in mind, so friends and family should stay home for this one.
Do I need to purchase books and materials for my classes during Orientation?
You will receive communications about courses and first assignments in early August and can make arrangements for texts and materials at that time. There is no need to manage this during Orientation although you are welcome to stop by the bookstore to purchase any Loyola apparel or accessories of your choosing if time permits!
Is there anything I need to prepare?
You will have the opportunity to discuss A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr during Orientation. Plan to finish the book before Orientation. You can get a copy from your local library, bookstore, or online sellers.
Will breakfast and lunch be provided?
Generally, hot coffee and tea will be available every morning and a light assortment of snacks will be available throughout each day. We suggest you have breakfast before arriving on campus. Grab and go lunches will be provided for students to take to assigned classrooms for lunchtime programming. Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options will be available.
