Online Teaching Courses

The Office of Online Learning offers a number of semi-self-paced and instructor-led courses to prepare faculty for teaching and delivering high-quality online, hybrid, and blended courses. Faculty who take our courses can expect to gain more knowledge, experience, and confidence in:

  • Using online learning technologies to deliver course materials and engage students
  • Best practices for designing or revising a course for delivery in online environments
  • Creating online-ready activities and assignments and providing students with feedback
  • Applying teaching strategies such as active learning, universal and inclusive design, and engagement in online course environments
  • Making online courses accessible to all student populations

Principles of Effective Instruction at Loyola

Principles of Effective Instruction at Loyola (PEI) is a foundational course in evidence-based instruction and mission-oriented teaching for Loyola instructors. This course is recommended for anyone new to teaching in general or new to teaching at Loyola and will also be useful for instructors hoping to redesign a course, boost engagement, or reach students in a more personal and human way in the classroom. This course is open to all instructors teaching in any mode (in-person, hybrid, and online).

Online Teaching Fundamentals

Online Teaching Fundamentals (OTF) prepares Loyola instructors to create, adapt, and/or deliver engaging, high-quality online courses at Loyola University Chicago. Instructors will learn to use Loyola’s suite of learning technologies to prepare online environments that are engaging, accessible, and informed by mission-oriented teaching practices.

Which course or courses should I take?

Take both courses if:

Take Principles of Effective Instruction at Loyola if:

  • You are teaching in-person and:
    • Are new to teaching
    • Are new to teaching at Loyola
    • Would like a refresher in course design or mission-oriented teaching practices like the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm

Take Online Teaching Fundamentals if:

  • You are teaching an online or hybrid course and:
    • Have taught in the classroom, but never online (excluding Covid terms SP20-SP21)
    • Have never taught online at Loyola (excluding Covid terms SP20-SP21)
    • Would like a refresher or primer in using Loyola’s suite of learning technologies

Please note: If you have been notified that you are required to take both courses due to the Online Teaching Readiness Requirement, but you already have significant experience teaching online, visit the Competency Equivalent page for an alternative option.

Sakai Training

To learn more about the specific functions of the Sakai LMS and how to use them, you can set up a consultation with the Learning Technologies & Innovation (LTI) team. LTI also offers various workshops on using Sakai and other instructional technologies.
