Online Teaching Professional Learning Community

The Office of Online Learning (OOL) invites you to join your online teaching colleagues at Loyola in the Online Teaching Professional Learning Community (PLC). Led by instructors and hosted by OOL, the Online Teaching PLC provides all Loyola educators with a dedicated space to share their experiences with online teaching, connect with colleagues about best practices and teaching strategies, and learn new methods for strengthening their online courses. Please note that all Loyola instructors who teach online are welcome to join, including faculty instructors (tenure-track, NTT, and adjunct), graduate students (TAs and instructors) and staff educators.

You can engage with the Online Teaching PLC in two ways: through an always-on, asynchronous community in Microsoft Teams or by way of bi-monthly synchronous meetings. Of course, we’d love to see you in both, too!

February 7, 2024, 11:30 - 12:30 Febraury’s topic will be digital equity, which encompasses equitable access to and use of technology for all communities and individuals in our courses. How much do we know about our students’ equitable access to technology? Are we creating an environment in which all students can and need to use technology in ways that are preparing them for participation in a modern society and economy? In this session, we’ll briefly cover the concept of digital equity then openly discuss how it applies to our courses. Pre-registration for the February meeting
March 13, 2024, 11:30-12:30 For our March meeting, we'll talk about attention and distraction in online learning environments and how we might address it in our classes. What does the research say about attention and distraction? How much can we control this for our students? How much should we educate them about attention and distraction, and how might we do so? We'll share some research and strategies and hear from everyone about their concerns and possible solutions as well. Pre-registration for the March meeting
April 10, 2024, 11:30-12:30 In April's meeting, we'll discuss the process of experimenting with our course design. When we add something new and unproven, how should we go about incorporating in into our courses? What guardrails or failsafes should we put up? To what degree should we talk to our students about the changes? Come share your own experiences with incorporating something new into your courses - lessons learned, hits and misses, and recommendations for each other.  Pre-registration for the April meeting
