SEL Work

We are committed to practical applications for trauma- informed and Anti-Racist Social Emotional Learning. Our philosophy through the Communtiy Schools Model is to center social-emotional learning (SEL) within an anti-racist, trauma-informed framework. Working to push beyond culturally responsive practices, and committing to anti-racist theories and implementation. This requires us to work alongside those who are also intent on deconstructing and reimagining SEL centered in anti-racist practices, thus going outside of the current and historically rooted education practices built in white supremacy. We know that our students are impacted everyday by violent and oppressive systems; SEL if done wrong will perpetuate these systems causing more harm to our students, particularly those that are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Our team will ensure that our curriculum, training and broader social-emotional learning work disrupts the traditional approaches to youth and community development and is to be constructed within the context, culture, and climate of each community. We strive to use an approach that works for all individuals with diverse lived experiences. Through successful SEL implementation, we strive for generations to have the proper tools and resources to be healthy, strong, and empowered communities. Our work encompases the following:

  • Independent research on the gaps between Anti-Racist practices, Trauma- informed care and SEL
  • Building Social Emotional Learning foundations through the intersectional lens of Trauma Informed Care and Anti-Racisit Practices
  • An educator and practitioner handbook and accompanying trainings aimed at building collective understanding through theory and best practices as well as practical application via activities that explore both youth and adult SEL needs
