Each year, the Stritch School of Medicine proudly honors distinguished alumni through the Alumni of the Year Awards. These awards recognize individuals whose careers and character reflect the core values of a Stritch education and a deep commitment to caring for the human spirit. Recipients exemplify service to humanity and excellence in research, innovation, and education. The awards were presented at a ceremony during Stritch Reunion Weekend, which took place September 26-28, 2025.

Excellence in Education Award Winner
Bruce L. Zuraw (MD '75)
Allergist/Immunologist and Professor of Medicine, UCSD

The Excellence in Education Award honors a graduate for expertise, dedication, and enthusiasm in teaching medical students and residents to become knowledgeable, skilled, and caring physicians. Dr. Zuraw has been an Allergy & Immunology Training Program Director for 23 years. He has trained over 60 fellows, and a number of those former fellows have gone on to achieve the rank of full professor.
Dr. Zuraw's Impact on Medicine:
- Distinguished Clinician Award from AAAAI; Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College; “For the Patient Award” from International C1-INH Workshop
- Endowed Chair & Professor of Medicine, UCSD; Chief, Division of Rheumatology and Allergy, UCSD 2013-2023, Founding Director of the US HAEA Angioedema Center at UCSD; Scientific Chair US HAEA & HAE-international
- Continuously federally funded as a Principal Investigator for 37 years with over 230 publications and 218 invited national or international lectures
- Major contributions in the areas of the kallikrein-kinin system and hereditary angioedema (HAE) that have led to the development of 16 new drugs and the transformation of HAE from a catastrophic to a manageable disease
Excellence in Research & Innovation Award Winner
Marcella M. Alsan, MD, MPH, PhD (MD '05)
Professor of Economics and Director of the Health Inequality Lab, Stanford University

The Excellence in Research & Innovation Award honors a graduate whose research has had a profound effect on the medical profession and the community as a whole. Dr. Alsan is a physician-economist and champion for health equity whose research helps more people get better care.
Dr. Alsan's Impact on Medicine:
- Leads the Health Inequality Lab at Stanford, studying practical ways to close health gaps across communities.
- MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow (2021) for groundbreaking work on trust, representation, and health.
- Member, National Academy of Medicine (2022)—one of the field’s highest honors.
- Winner of the Arrow Award in Health Economics (2019 & 2025), including recent work showing how to make clinical trials more inclusive so treatments work for everyone.
- Associate Editor, Quarterly Journal of Economics; Co-Chair Editor, Review of Economics & Statistics; Associate Editor, Journal of Economic Literature; Co-Chair, J-PAL’s US Health Care Delivery Initiative (MIT).
Excellence in Service to Patients Award Winner
James V. Talano, (MD '65, BS '61)
Founder & Medical Director, SWICFT Medical Partners / SWICFT Health / Southwest Florida Research, Naples, Florida

The Excellence in Service to Patients Award honors an alum who best characterizes cura personalis, or “caring for the whole person." Dr. Talano has extensive experience shaping academic cardiology programs, developing innovations in non-invasive cardiology, leading clinical trials, and mentoring students and physicians.
Dr. Talano's Impact on Medicine:
- Pioneering Academic Leadership: Served as Chief of Cardiology at Tulane University and Cleveland Clinic Florida, and held endowed professorships at Northwestern and Tulane, shaping academic cardiology programs and mentoring generations of physicians.
- Innovation in Non-Invasive Cardiology: Developed the first esophageal probe for transesophageal echocardiography while at Loyola-Hines Hospital; Authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications.
- Extensive Clinical Trial Leadership: Directed and participated in dozens of major NIH and industry cardiovascular trials influencing global standards in heart failure, ischemic heart disease, lipid management, and arrhythmia care.
- Professional Society and Policy Impact: Held national leadership roles with the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, and American Heart Association.
- Regional and Community Leadership: Founded and led SWICFT Cardiology in Naples, Florida, while serving as president of the Collier County Medical Society and chair of hospital IRB and medical education committees. Currently serving on the boards of the Southwest Florida Physicians Association, Community Health Partners, and the Neighborhood Health Clinic.
Excellence in Community Service Award Winner
Michael F. Gutzeit, MD, FAAP (MD '85, BS '80)
President of Primary Care at Children’s Wisconsin

The Excellence in Community Service Award honors a graduate who continues to embody a passion for social justice and provides health care and service to those in need on a local, national, or global level. Dr. Gutzeit is an experienced leader in primary and urgent care who is committed to addressing health disparities and strengthening communities.
Dr. Gutzeit's Impact on Medicine:
- Co-leader for faith-based Mission of Healing trips to El Salvador for 16 years, which includes resources to provide physical, mental, social, and spiritual support to approximately 500 people each year.
- Past Co-leader for addressing Health Disparities work in the national Solutions for Patient Safety network of ~ 150 children’s hospitals. This includes identification, analysis, and mitigation strategies to reduce patient harm associated with race and ethnicity.
- Past Family Service of Waukesha Board member, strengthening communities and families by empowering individuals through programs and services to support mental health.
