Loyola's new Institute of Environmental Sustainability is Gold LEED-certified and one of the most innovative buildings on the Lake Shore Campus. The facility was completed in Fall 2013 and includes many classrooms, research and teaching labs, a clean energy lab, an urban agricultural greenhouse, and a green cafĂ©. It shares common spaces with San Francisco Hall, Loyola's only green residence hall.

Some features include:

  • Largest geothermal complex in Chicago, 90 geothermal wells, 500 feet deep, providing over 700 tons of cooling energy

  • Rainwater collections and reuse for greenhouse irrigation

  • Natural ventilation and aquaponics systems

  • Three-story high vertical farming element

  • 3,100 square foot eco dome greenhouse

  • Sustainable food systems and urban agriculture research projects and production labs

  • State-of-the-art laboratory spaces for anthropology, environmental science, ecotoxicology

  • A clean energy lab that will allow the biodiesel program to increase fuel production by up to 100,000 gallons per year
