Five-Year BA/MEd in Chemistry and Secondary Education

Students interested in the five-year dual degree program are encouraged to contact the School of Education as early as possible in their first four years to outline their course of study.

General Admission Requirements

Undergraduate chemistry majors should complete the following to apply:

  1. A Completed Application Form. You may submit your application form online
  2. Official Transcripts
    Applicants must submit official transcripts for all undergraduate and any graduate work. To be eligible for admission, your transcript must show an earned bachelor's degree or a bachelor’s degree in progress. Certified copies of transcripts are acceptable; faxed copies of transcripts are not considered official. If you attended Loyola University Chicago previously, you do not need to request transcripts; we have them on record. Transcripts must show a GPA of at least a 3.0. 

    In exceptional cases, applicants whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 may be admitted. Each program area gives meaningful consideration to the applicant's graduate GPA, recommendations, professional experience and reasons for pursuing a graduate program, as well as to the diversity of the student body.
  3. One Letter of Recommendation
    If you supply your recommender's email address as part of your completed online application form, then your recommendation letters will be submitted directly through the online application system. Recommenders and References may be academic or professional in nature. Current students and alumni of Loyola University Chicago must seek a letter of recommendation from someone other than the Teaching, Learning, and Leading with Schools and Communities (TLLSC) program advisor.
  4. A Personal Statement
    Your statement should be 2-3 pages, and you should describe your:

    1. Academic andand professional background and experience.
    2. Plans and goals for the masters in Education - Secondary Education program and upon completion of graduate work.
    3. Your perspective on social justice as it applies to preparing to be a teacher.
    4. Why you are a good fit for Loyola University Chicago's Teaching, Learning and Leading with Schools and Communities program.

Content Area Specific Requirements

Illinois Content Area Exam
Students must pass the Illinois State Board of Education Test of Academic Proficiency prior to beginning the education courses and pass the Chemistry Content Exam as admission for the MEd.

For applicants interested in becoming Chemistry teachers:

Candidates must have 32 total credit hours at grade C- or above in the specific content area where licensure is sought.

There are specific competencies that must be addressed, including in mathematics, and a transcript analysis will be conducted.

Once one holds a Professional Educator License (PEL) in a given teaching field, additional content area endorsements are added by passing the content exam and providing evidence of 18 semester hours of coursework in the desired content area.
