Jack MacCarthy Service in Medicine Award

Fr. Dr. Jack MacCarthy (MD '77), a Norbertine priest and physician who graduated from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, has dedicated his personal and professional life to service of the poor in the most remote corner of the Peruvian Amazon. Initially intending to spend a short period of time in Peru, Fr. Dr. MacCarthy’s commitment to the poor grew to last several decades, eventually expanding to build a regional hospital, servicing a large catchment area of extremely remote villages which are primarily accessed by boat along the Napo River. Fr. Dr. Jack MacCarthy serves as a witness of the work that can be done and the relationships that can be built at the service of justice when medicine is practiced in faith and given as an act of service. This award recognizes an individual who similarly demonstrates the embodiment of medicine as an act of faithful service—someone whose work in medicine touches the Catholic vision, mission, and gospel of service. This award will be given during St. Luke Week in October as the Loyola community recognizes St. Luke, the patron saint of physicians.

Criteria:

  • Alumnus or alumna of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
  • Sustained commitment to service of the underserved, the poorest of the poor
  • Personal and professional commitment to the Jesuit, Catholic values of Loyola University Chicago
  • Recipient’s work touches the Catholic vision, mission, and gospel of service
  • Views the practice of medicine as an act of service vocation
