Health Law Community, Colleagues, and Friends,

The Beazley Institute for Health Law & Policy has much to reflect upon and to celebrate this summer.  As we look to the beginning of a new school year, and a new normal, here are a few noteworthy developments within the Institute.

New Leadership and New Faculty

  • As of January 2020, the Beazley Institute has a tripartite leadership model.  Professors Jordan Paradise and Nadia Sawicki are the new Co-Directors of the Beazley Institute, and Kristin Finn is the Executive Director.  Jordan, Nadia, and Kristin are thrilled to be working together in shaping the future of the Beazley Institute.
  • In July, the Beazley Institute welcomed two new faculty members:

Charlotte Tschider has joined Loyola as an Assistant Professor of Law.  Professor Tschider was most recently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Law for the 2019-2020 school year and the Jaharis Faculty Fellow in Health Law and Intellectual Property at the DePaul University College of Law from 2018-2019.  Her primary scholarship is in information privacy, cybersecurity law, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on the global health care industry.

Jenna Prochaska has joined the Health Justice Project as a Clinical Teaching Fellow.  Jenna brings a broad range of public interest legal experience, with a focus on poverty law and health care access.  She has represented low-income Chicagoans in eviction, bankruptcy, consumer fraud, debt collection, and other housing and consumer matters at Legal Aid Chicago.  Previously, at the ACLU of Illinois, she worked to protect and expand access to reproductive health care through litigation, legislative and regulatory advocacy, and community education.

Fond Farewells

  • In June, Professor Larry Singer retired from Loyola and was granted emeritus status at the law school.  Larry’s vision for the Beazley Institute and dedication to the health law program have profoundly shaped who we are, and we thank him for his decades of commitment to health law education and service.
  • Former Health Justice Project Clinical Teaching Fellow Ron Hochbaum has joined the faculty of the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke Law School.  We wish him well and thank him for three terrific years with us.

Programmatic and Academic Updates

  • Statement of Solidarity and Commitment to Racial Justice: The Beazley Institute, Health Justice Project, and Annals of Health Law & Life Sciences drafted aStatement of Solidarity and Commitment to Racial Justice, including action items spanning program development, curriculum, and community engagement.  As educators of future leaders in health care, we commit to working towards a more equitable, diverse, and anti-racist community within Loyola’s health law program, and supporting our students in becoming future leaders who will work to transform unjust and racist systems.
  • New Medical-Legal Partnership: This fall, the Health Justice Project will launch a new medical-legal partnership in Maywood, Illinois in collaboration with Loyola University Medical Center and Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine.  Under the direction of Professor Kate Mitchell, the Maywood MLP will address the structural and social determinants of health for vulnerable communities of color in western Chicago and the near western suburbs.
  • New Courses: Beazley Institute faculty are developing several new courses to address our students’ needs and interests. In Summer 2020, Professor Karen Shaw, Director of Graduate Legal Studies and Health Law Legal Writing Instructor, developed and taught a new multidisciplinary course, Interprofessional Writing and Communication for Health Care Equity, which addresses the needs of populations with low health literacy.  Professor Kate Mitchell, Director of the Health Justice Project, is developing a new HJP Lab course for Spring 2021 that focuses on race and health disparities.
  • COVID Student Writing Project:  In response to the broad legal implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor John Blum is spearheading and funding a student research paper series, Healthcare Governance Considerations During the COVID-19 Pandemic, to be published in the Journal of Regulatory Compliance

Upcoming Events: In accordance with Loyola’s guidelines for pandemic management, all Beazley Institute events for the 2020-2021 academic year will be hosted in an online format.

With best wishes for all a safe and productive fall semester,

The Beazley Institute for Health Law & Policy
