Successful Student Profile #2

Fazeel

BEFORE LOYOLA

Fazeel is from a big family; he is the 5th sibling out of six. He is from a town in central Illinois, which is closer to St. Louis, MO than it is to Chicago. His parents are from Pakistan and he still has family who live there. He has had the chance to visit and even lived there for 3 years to attend an international high school. Transferring his credits to and from his school in Illinois was hard, though. He spent a lot of time playing basketball with his friends, volunteering in nearby communities, and learning martial arts and kick-boxing. He also participated in the Model UN at his school. But moving around so much made it hard for Fazeel to do as well as in high school as he feels that he should.

FIRST YEAR AT LUC

Fazeel decided to come to Loyola because he really wanted to be in Chicago, a big, diverse city. He was also interested in medicine and knew about Loyola’s excellent pre-med preparation. He knew that when it came to his studies, he hadn’t worked as hard has he could have in high school, so he has decided to make up for it now. Fazeel applied the effort necessary to really reach his potential and earned a 4.0 in his first semester at Loyola. He’s not really into the party scene, so he continues to spend a lot of time on the basketball court. He really enjoys traveling to other US cities to visit his high school friends that he met in Pakistan. Fazeel earned a cumulative GPA of 3.892 in his first year.

WORDS OF WISDOM

  1. “Prioritize your classes.” Sometimes, Fazeel has skipped other activities to make room for studying in his daily schedule. He chose to always put his course work first.
  2. “Personalize your study schedule.” Because science comes very easily Fazeel, he knew that he had to spend more time and effort studying for his non-science classes like history. Prioritizing his time in this way helped him succeed in all of his classes.
  3. “Find your own best place to study.” Fazeel does his best studying in his dorm room. Like all students, Fazeel gets distracted and gives in to procrastination sometimes. But he recognizes that he must take responsibility for his own studies and finds balance between his work time and socializing time.
