School-Based Health Center

The Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing’s School-Based Health Center at Proviso East High School provides vital health services to teens while offering experiential learning opportunities to Loyola Nursing students.

Located less than a mile from Loyola’s Health Sciences Campus, the SBHC offers medical, mental health, nutrition and preventive health care services in Maywood, Illinois. Managed by Loyola Nursing and operated within the high school, the SBHC provides Loyola students with clinical experiences in community health, allowing them to put concepts they’re learning—in public health, risk assessment, epidemiology, and more—into action. Students from the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the Stritch School of Medicine, and the School of Social Work also serve at the SBHC.

The SBHC also provides opportunities for faculty practice and graduate projects.

What we do

Launched in 2002, the SBHC delivers a full range of preventive, primary, and mental health care services to Proviso East students free of charge:

  • School and sports physicals
  • Immunizations
  • Individual therapy and other behavioral health services
  • Medical nutrition therapy
  • Primary health care
  • Care for urgent and chronic illnesses
  • Laboratory services
  • Sexual health education and testing
  • Health education outreach

Our mission is to enhance Proviso Township High School students’ academic performance and healthy lifestyle choices by providing medical, mental health, and preventive health care services.

By providing health services on school grounds, the SBHC ensures students miss little classroom instruction and lessens the amount of time busy parents spend seeking health care. Additionally, our Pirate Pantry provides students with food, toiletries, and school supplies and a calm room provides space for mental health care.

We do more than make sure Proviso East students are healthy during their high school years. Our goal is to ensure their health long after graduation and improve health outcomes within the Maywood community. By fostering awareness of healthy habits, we’re helping prevent chronic disease and promote lifelong health.

We’re also invested in the community, serving as a member of the Proviso East High School Wellness Committee and the Community Advisory Board.

Are you a Proviso East student, parent, or guardian? Call (708) 668-9067, email LoyolaSBHC@pths209.org, or come to Room 86B to schedule an appointment.

The SBHC is fully accredited by the Illinois Department of Public Health and meets all standards for quality in primary care and behavioral health. The SBHC is funded by grants and is independent from the high school and school nurse.
