How to Become a Tutor

Undergraduates who wish to be hired as paid tutors in the Writing Center must first complete training in ENGL 220: “Theory and Practice of Writing Tutoring.” Enrollment in this course requires instructor permission, which can be obtained when one of your instructors recommends you on the basis of excellent writing and interpersonal skills. Your instructor should send the recommendation to the instructor of record for ENGL 220 two weeks prior to the start of registration. Once the recommendation is received, you will be contacted to confirm your interest in a seat in the class. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis, and the class fills up quickly. Successful completion of this course fulfills both Service Learning and Writing Intensive credits. Students who demonstrate excellent performance in the class are eligible to become paid employees of the Writing Center the following semester.

Graduate students who wish to be hired as tutors should contact the Writing Center Director, Amy Kessel, directly to schedule an interview.

We encourage students in all disciplines to join our community!
