There are many ways to follow the mandate of St Ignatius. Literature—reading it and writing about it—is a most powerful way perhaps. My goal is for my students to realize this and to know they can carry that power into their lives after Loyola. Everything is a narrative. My students need to learn they are always, at all times, communicating to an audience and that truth/reality is only as powerful as the narrative conveying it is well organized and audience-aware. No discipline at a university escapes the necessity of narration. I hope my students learn how to shape and control powerful narrations by mastering tightly developed arguments, well chosen words, and smooth sentences and paragraphs. These students will be well able to follow St. Ignatius’ mandate.
