Minutes for the Rochester meeting of the Committee on International Education

The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Members and friends present introduced themselves. It was noted that there were international visitors from Australia, Brazil, Mexico and the Phillipines.

The minutes of the winter meeting at San Diego were unanimously approved. (Moved: Fitzgibbons, second: Drenchko).

Chair's Report:

Programs I committee meeting announcements were made:

  1. This meeting is focussed on optics, primarily due to location of the Eastman-Kodak Company and related optics research in Rochester. There are 42 workshops (7 were canceled), 64 sessions and 50 exhibitors.
  2. J. Fitzgibbons announced that the Membership and Benefits Committee has established a memorial fund in honor of Arnold Arons. Contributions are welcome and will be used as part of the general AAPT funds.
  3. Philadelphia meeting (Jan. 19-23, 2002): Plenary speakers for the winter 2002 meeting include: F. Selov, U.S. Representative R. Holt (D-NJ and AAPT member) and F. Wilczek of Princeton. The committee will sponsor a session on "Teaching Around the World", consisting of 2-4 invited papers and a panel discussion on service in the Peace Corps. The contributed paper deadline is tentatively September 4th, 2001.
  4. To allow for later paper deadlines, the Executive Board will publish the meeting schedule, but eliminate the full listing of abstracts in the Announcer. Meeting pre-registrants will receive a full copy of the abstracts and there will be copies of the abstract bulletin available at the meeting. This policy will begin at the Philadelphia meeting and may allow the present deadline to be later than September 4th.
  5. The Korean Physical Society has made a reciprocal agreement with AAPT to extend benefits and member rates to meetings for members of the other society.

Upcoming international conferences:

  1. National Physics Conference: October 24-26, 2001, St. Marys University, Bayombong, Phillipines.
  2. International Conference on Computer Teaching and Physics Education: December 4-6, 2001, ISMEd, University of the Phillipines Diliman, Quezon City, Phillipines.
  3. There will be a physics teacher conference in the Phillipines in April 2002. More information will be provided later.
  4. The 12th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists, entitled "Women in a knowledge-based society", will be held in Ottowa Canada from July 27-31, 2002.   5. GIREP Conference: Lund, Sweden, 2002. Overlaps with the AAPT summer meeting.

Report on past international conferences:

  1. B. Preece attended the GIREP Conference in Barcelona as the AAPT designated representative. The conference was multi-national and included eight AAPT registrants.
  2. H. Gottlieb reported on an international conference he attended in Cyprus, Greece.

Philadelphia meeting sessions-

In addition to the sponsored session in Philadelphia discussed in the Chair's report, there was discussion on two possible sessions to be cosponsored with other AAPT committees.

The Committee on Computers is sponsoring a one-hour session on "Computers in Physics Education in England". The format is unclear, since most sessions have a format longer than one hour (except for Crackerbarrels). It was decided to support the session, but let the Computer Committee decide the final format with the Programs Committee.

  1. Sharma described a PER Workshop to be offered in Philadelphia to provide instruction on tutorials in multidisciplinary themes, developed in Australia. A motion passed to cosponsor this workshop (Motion: Fitzgibbons, Second: Chow).

There was a discussion about the Fuller Fund procedures. Award letters will be sent to both the awardee and the nominator. There was also a general call for nominations.

  5. Winter - January 24-28, 2004: Radisson Deauville Resort, Miami Beach, FL.

Nominations for new members of the committee:

The following names were submitted to the AAPT Nominating Committee for membership on the committee: G. Aubrecht, T. McCullogh, X. Zou and S. George.

Session for the Boise meeting:

The committee plans to sponsor a Crackerbarrel reception early in the meeting for all international attendees. It was suggested that perhaps the best time would be late Sunday afternoon, before the Vendor's general reception to avoid conflicts. Committee members will handle details and announcements.

Nominations for the Fuller Fund:

The following people were nominated for Fuller Fund awards: M. Souza (Brazil) and X. K. Luo (P.R. of China).

IAC Cuba: H. Manos

  1. Manos (AAPT) and F. Stein (APS) are negotiating with the IAC and Prof. Molta (Havana) to hold the 2003 IAC meeting in Havana. The IAC is due to vote soon on extending the invitation to Cuba for hosting this meeting. If approved, the meeting would be held in July, 2003 in Havana. Details will be made available as soon as they are received.
