Strange gamma ray flashes from lightning may have explanation

New Scientist Magazine highlighted research by Dr. Rasha Abbasi on the origins of gamma rays in lightning in a recent article. Dr. Abbasi and her colleagues recorded a lightning storm using both a high-speed camera and the Telescope Array, an ultra-high energy cosmic ray detector in Utah, to see whether terrerstrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) were accompanied by a flash of lightning. For more details, Dr. Abbasi's original article can be accessed at arXiv.
