Overview:
Close to two thirds of the over 1.7 million U.S. nursing home (residents have a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and are at high risk of hospital transfer. Reducing avoidable hospitalizations for NH residents is a national priority due to the negative effects on resident health and high Medicare and Medicaid costs NH-to-hospital transfer decision making is complex and relies on timely transmission of information among the interdisciplinary team. Dr. Powell will describe her recently awarded R 01 from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging where her team is applying natural language processing and social network analysis to text messages shared among an interdisciplinary team about NH resident transfer.
Speaker:
Kim Powell, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri, Sinclair School of Nursing Her program of research broadly focuses on health information sharing among healthcare providers, nurses, patients, and family caregivers using technological tools such as in home sensor systems, patient portals, text messaging, and telehealth. Dr Powell is currently the secretary of the Nursing Informatics Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association and co editor of the Technology Innovation section of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.
