Second Stage Lab
The Second Stage Laboratory projects are intended to expand the applied student-led educational opportunities in the Theatre Department. It is a laboratory for experimenting with theories, ideas, methods, materials, etc. found in the classroom and an opportunity to put theories learned in the classroom into practical application.
Proposals will be considered on a rolling semester basis, versus an annual basis. There will be a call for participation near the top of each semester for the subsequent semester, and projects will be approved and organized prior to the registration period for subsequent semester. Depending on the nature of the project it may qualify for different types of academic credit. These are typically THTR 323: Rehearsal and Performance, THTR 324: Applied Design and Management, or Independent Study, but it could take other forms.

Applications and Timeline
A call for participation will happen at the top of each semester for the subsequent semester.
The application period for Spring 2021 Second Stage Laboratory Project Proposals begins Wednesday, September 30 and ends on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020
The application must be completed by the deadline. Students may submit a written application or video presentation, depending on which option the student feels best suits their project idea and strengths. The Second Stage committee will review applications and invite select applicants to participate in a Zoom presentation of their project followed by an interview with the Second Stage committee.
With the Application, please include:
- Copy of resume outlining relevant production experience
- Copy of supporting materials (if you are referencing or using a text, or if there are existing materials that inspired the project)
- A draft budget outlining resources requested (if applicable)

Proposals should be focused on new learning outcomes:
- Projects that the students have already had some previous experience with are not encouraged.
- Stronger proposals are ones where the topic or idea is new to the student, where the project can be one that is a reflection of learning in the time since being at Loyola.
- Material that is been published and the student does not have the rights to or isn't in the public domain will not be considered at this time.
Spring 2021 Considerations
For the Spring 2021 semester we are only considering digital projects for the Second Stage season due to COVID-19 restrictions.
There are a variety of project models that may lend themselves better to digital media including opportunities for masterclasses with guests that may be available, and projects developed specifically for remote presentation.
Due to the increased complexity of digital performance rights in our remote environment, the Committee will not be considering for the Spring 2021 semester projects in which the student(s) does not have the rights to perform the material.
Options may include looking at material in the public domain or developing original materials.
