Phishing & Spam
Increase in Phishing Attempts - Stay Vigilant!
Dear Loyola Students,
We have noticed a significant increase in phishing attempts targeting our community. Phishing is a deceptive practice where attackers pose as trusted entities to steal sensitive information. These phishing scams often involve emails that appear to come from legitimate sources, aiming to trick individuals into divulging personal data.
Most recently, we have seen a rise in fraudulent emails disguised as job postings. In addition to the practices below, we encourage you to read these tips from Career Services on avoiding job scams.
To safeguard your information, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Be Cautious of Confidential Requests: Legitimate organizations will not ask for sensitive information like passwords or financial details via email.
- Avoid Pressure Tactics: If an email pressures you to provide sensitive information by threatening account deactivation or service delays, verify the request through alternative communication channels.
- Scrutinize Generic Requests: Authentic emails typically reference personal account details, whereas phishing attempts often are not personalized.
- Do Not Submit Information Through Emails: Never input confidential information into forms embedded within email messages.
- Use Direct URL Entry: Avoid clicking on links in emails. Instead, access websites by typing the URL directly into your browser's address bar.
Staying vigilant and informed is our best defense against these threats. If you receive a suspicious email, please do not hesitate to report it to our service desk at: itsservicedesk@luc.edu.
Please remember, Loyola will never ask you for your username or password.
Sincerely,
