We are so excited to welcome you to the School of Education!

As a new student in the School of Education (SOE), we know you have some questions about your next steps. Here are some answers to the common questions that we receive.

Where necessary, the question will specify information related to new undergraduate students and to new graduate students.

When is orientation?

Undergraduate Students

Graduate Students

You will receive information from your program about orientation. Please check your Loyola email for more information

When is Convocation?

UNDERGRADUATE

The University hosts an opening Student Convocation for all new first year & transfer students. 

New Student Convocation is a celebration of university life and the academic traditions of Loyola. Convocation is an annual tradition where all new students (first-year and transfer) officially begin their academic careers as Ramblers. Students are welcomed to the university community by the President, Provost, faculty, staff, student leaders, and a special guest. Here is a link to New Student Convocation.

Graduate

The School of Education hosts an opening Graduate Student Convocation for all new graduate students.

The 2022 Graduate Student Convocation will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, in Lewis Towers (WTC). The Convocation begins at 5:30pm and many, but not all, programs will hold their orientation immediately after the Convocation. This annual tradition celebrates your official beginning as a student in the School of Education and an introduction to the faculty, staff, and other important areas around the University. A link to registration is sent to all enrolled graduate students in August via your Loyola email address. 

Who is my academic advisor?

Undergraduate Students

All first year students will be assigned a First and Second Year Academic Advisor.

Graduate students

You will be assigned a faculty member from your program to be your academic advisor, check your Loyola email for more information.

How do I register for courses?

Undergraduate Students

Over the summer before your first semester at LUC you will meet with your academic advisor who will assist you in registering for classes. Keep an eye on your email for more information about your appointment.

Graduate Students

You will receive more information about this process via email from your academic advisor/program about what classes to register for and how to do so.

What courses do I register for?

Your program chair can help you determine what courses you should register for. You will receive more information from your chair regarding next steps and we encourage you to consult with them.

Note for Undergraduate Students: During your summer orienation, your academic advisor will assist you in determining your first semester courses.

When do I register for courses?

Undergraduate Students

Registration will take place in July, you will recieve more information about registation during summer orientation.

Graduate Students

You will recieve registration information from your program, check the School of Education Academic Calendar for Grad registration dates.

Where can I find course descriptions?

Course descriptions can be found in LOCUS. During your course registration, your academic advisor will assist you in determining which courses are the best for you to sign up for and how to identify course descriptions.

Note for Undergraduate Students: you will learn more about this process during the first term in your UNIV 101 course.

When do courses officially start?

Classes for the Fall Semester begin in late August and classes for the Spring semester begin in late January. More information about the exact start date for the term can be found on the SOE academic calendar.

Will my courses be virtual or in-person?

Your program chair will be able to provide more information about the courses that will be held virtually and which will be in-person. 

Are academic accommodations available?

Loyola University Chicago will do it's best to accommodate your academic needs. Please visit the Student Accessibility Center webpage to register with them and request academic accomodations.

What are the housing options?

Undergraduate Students

Visit Loyola's Residence Life webpage to learn more about on-campus housing options.

Graduate Students

There are some on-campus Graduate Housing opportunities on the Water Tower Campus.

What are my financial assistance options?

Undergraduate Students

Graduate Students

What is Sakai?

Sakai is the online learning platform used by Loyola. For your classes, your instructor will give you information about how to navigate your courses Sakai page during class.

Once you have registered for courses, you are also encouraged to join the SOE Student Community Site which will be a one-stop-shop during your studies in the SOE for forms, events, contacts, and so much more. More information about this page will be sent to you via your Loyola email. You can also follow these simple instructions.
