Graduate Program Outcomes

Upon completion of these programs, students will be able to:

  • Account for the significance and the history of British and American literature (broadly defined)
  • Articulate an appreciation and understanding of diverse voices in literary history
  • Think about literary texts both critically and creatively
  • Write effectively and persuasively about a broad range of texts in English
  • Contribute to existing scholarly discourses in the field as a literary critic
  • Understand the diversity of experiences registered in texts by authors writing in English 

In addition, students in the Ph.D. program gain valuable knowledge about how to become active members of the profession by:

  • Presenting at academic conferences
  • Submitting new research to scholarly journals for publication
  • Organizing symposia and other events designed to circulate work in progress
  • Preparing for the academic job market and related fields through professional development activities
